Doctors seek to prolong the material processes of life and so the lives of their patients and ultimately of themselves. This prolongation is first and foremost the healing of damage done to these processes. Medical research has made considerable strides in healing damage resulting from injury and from disease. It has, however, made precious little progress in healing damage resulting from the fact that these processes were not built to last. The replacement of old and failing parts with young and barely used parts is medicines' new frontier. But transplantation is not medicine's final frontier. Why replace the parts that are old and failing with part that are destined to age and fail? Why trust in material processes that were not built to last when material processes could be built to last? Bio-engineering promises eternal life. Dr. Herbert West will save us all.
