The Book of Vile Darkness is an evil artifact that, when read, grants experience points and a point of Wisdom to evil divine spellcasters whom read it. Neutral or Good characters face various unfortunate fates, from loss of XP to corruption to even death.[1] In the Demiplane of Dread, the powers of the Book of Vile Darkness are enhanced, such that it grants a substantially hire boost in XP to the evil divine spellcaster whom reads it. To Good characters, reading the book can cause madness.[2][3] Reading this evil tome warrants a Powers Check.[2]
The Cult of Vecna holds this Book in particularly high regard, for it is said that Vecna, during his time on ancient Oerth, contributed to its creation.[4]
