Stakaster was an enforcer and information seeker for Azalin when he ruled Knurl.
[1], Stakaster was an ethnic minority in Azal'Lan's kingdom. His ethnicity proved helpful when the king needed to subjugate the tribes, but in the end Azal'Lan's depredations turned Stakaster against him. Stakaster masterminded a magically-aided ambush that trapped the king and his loyalist elite guards in the forest, leading to Azalin fleeing into the Mists and entering Ravenloft.

In the fan-made adventure, The Tower of Azal' Lan, it is revealed that Stakaster was also an apprentice in wizardry to Azalin, and eventually made his way into Ravenloft, where he was turned into a vampire by Strahd before returning to Knurl.
