A water-powered machine captures kinetic energy from running water with a waterwheel and uses it to do work of some sort. To be of any great use however, such machines must be built where there is a fairly constant flow of water, at least when they are to be put to use, or where water can be captured and stored as potential energy, available for conversion into kinetic energy when needed. The smaller and less constant the source of running water, the more likely such a machine will rely upon a mill pond.
