The avent of the incest taboo begins the trade in daughters, otherwise known as marriage, by which families receive in return son-in-laws. The taboo places both father and son under the rule of law, places sons under the rule of their fathers, and makes fathers accountable to their families. As such it is the advent of marriage, the advent of law, the advent of politics, the advent of society, the advent of property, and the advent of economics. And the transgression of the incest taboo is the advent of crime. Biological man leaves the cave behind and civilised man comes into existence with language and the incest taboo, the latter arguably backed up by religion.
