The Darkenheights is a peak in the part of the Shadow Rift furthest east[1], somewhere between the borders of Barovia and Nova Vaasa[1] but perhaps close to the border of the latter[2]. The Obsidian Gate rests at its top, but the climb to the top is filled with inherent danger. If one falls, it will likely be onto spiky stones, further enhancing falling damage.[3] The Darkenheights' slope is jagged and hard, working away at anything (whether rope or flesh) climbing it for any length of time[3]. Other hazards including falling rocks, vertigo, faulty handholds, and becoming wedged in the stone.[4] Moreover, both the saugh and spiders of various sizes regularly patrol the Darkenheights.[4] It is of little wonder the area is avoided by the Arak.[5]
The Darkenheights is known as the Anvomaura. According to "S", the Darkenheights rises up to 2,500 above the Black Marsh, leaving 3,000 ft. to the start of the Mists of Shadow.[6]
