The Holy Symbol of Ravenkind was created by the Most High Priest Kir of the Church of Andral in 350 BC. He died during its creation. A year later, when Strahd caused Barovia to become the first domain of Realms of Dread, the Holy Symbol followed him. Being a vampire, he could not touch so holy an object and it sat in Castle Ravenloft quietly until 499 BC. An elven vampire named Jander Sunstar, pursuing the one who had driven his love Anna insane, traveled with a priest and thief named Sasha and Leisl to Ravenloft and discovered the Holy Symbol, using it to put the vengeful ghost of Sergei von Zarovich to rest. They used it in their confrontation with Strahd as well. The two mortals couldn't overcome Strahd's powers and present the Holy Symbol, but Jander did despite the fact it would harm him as much as Strahd. The encounter forced Strahd into hibernation to heal from the wounds while the Sasha and Leisl escaped. Jander was lost for 200 years in the Mists. The Holy Symbol returned to its place in Castle Ravenloft until the year 740 BC.
During the Grand Conjunction a confluence of events sends adventurers, Azalin, and the arcanoloth Inajira back in time to 354 BC in a plot to change history. The Holy Symbol, as well as the Icon of Ravenloft, are stolen from Castle Ravenloft. During these events, the Holy Symbol is pressed against Inajira's Book of Keeping, destroying it and causing the Grand Conjunction to collapse, as the deal Strahd made for victory in the final battle against the Tergs is undone. In the present, the Holy Symbol and Icon alike disappear after the Grand Conjunction. Their whereabouts remain unknown.
The lawful good secret society known as the Keepers of the Black Feather seek the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind as the means to permanently destroying Strahd and have done so for centuries. They remain unaware the Holy Symbol has disappeared somewhere.
