Vivisection consists of the careful cutting apart of the flesh of a still living thing, whether that of an [[animal]] or a [[plant]], in the quest for [[knowledge]] of the material processes of [[life]]. Vivisection is a fundamental practice in [[biology]] and [[medicine]] and is taught universally to biology students and to all [[medical students]] of advanced lands. [[Exploration]], [[experimentation]], and [[research]] in the fields of biology and medicine depend upon, and make copious use of, vivisection. All types of [[surgery]] are vivisections. Vivisection must not be confused with [[dissection]], wherein the flesh that is cut open is that of a freshly dead thing. Vivisection is often said to be [[cruelty]] and is sometimes equated with, and indeed used as, [[torture]]. It has a somewhat unsavoury reputation among the unwashed masses of modern lands where it is nonetheless legal and is loosely regulated at best. It may be greeted with violence in more primative lands and in such places a [[chiurgeon]] who looses a patient on his or her [[operating table]] may be seized by a [[mob]] or the authorities as a [[murderer]]. [[Religion]] tends to take a dim view of [[vivisection]], often accusing its practitioners of being [[butchers]].
