Anton Misroi, Darklord of Souragne
Unlike many other darklords, Misroi doesn't take an active hand in running his domain, instead allowing his citizens to handle their own affairs; yet the citizenry revere Misroi as the Lord of the Dead. The only laws he has set down -- and which are strictly enforced -- are that the newly dead are not to be buried or cremated until four days after their death, and that only clerical and necromantic magics are allowed to be cast in the borders of Souragne.  His control over land that makes up his domain, however, is absolute and in many ways unequaled; for instance he can pass through any tree in his swamp to another. His mastery over the undead is for all practical purposes without limit, and he can instantly slay anyone to serve as one of his zombies. Souragne would have been annexed by the Core years ago had it not been for Misroi resisting such an event. One of his many powers is to scry across the entire Demiplane, and he prefers to set himself and his domain apart from it.

His ability to merge with the trees and ground of the swamp makes him almost impossible to kill, and enables him to strike his enemies from almost anywhere, in an instant. Those who fail are affected as if a contagion spell had been cast on them, inflicting a disease of Anton’s choice. Those who fail their save by more than 10 points die instantly and become zombies under Anton’s control. Anton can activate or deactivate this aura at will, as a free action.

He can mentally command them as a free action, and zombies under his influence cannot be controlled or rebuked by anyone else, though they can be turned. Anton can send his zombies outside the swamp, where it is possible for him to lose control of them; in this case, all zombies are still considered to be under Anton’s influence. Anton Misroi
Anton Misroi

Anton Misroi is the Darklord of Souragne, and is revered as the Loa, Lord of the Dead by Souragnians. Despite becoming a Zombie Lord at the moment of his death, and retaining the powers thereof, he is now fully alive. Misroi is by many accounts a pleasant and cordial character, but can be equally ruthless to anyone who spites him.[1]

Background

Anton Misroi hails from Oerth, in the region known as Sasserine[2]. He was a spellsinger[1] as well as a vicious aristocratic owner of the plantation Maison d'Sablet who brutalized anyone who crossed him. One day he found his wife in the arms of a neighboring plantation owner, who was only consoling Misroi's wife -- but Misroi immediately assumed otherwise. He had them tossed into a patch of quicksand and stayed to watch their slow deaths. When this occurred, the two new corpses of his wife and neighbor sprung out of the quicksand, and to Misroi's horror, grasped their murderer and dragged him into the quicksand. Upon his death, he was transformed into a zombie lord and his plantation and the surrounding area was snatched up by the Demiplane of Dread and became an Island of Terror[1] (or a copy of them was -- Misroi's original disused estate still exists on Oerth[3]) with Misroi as its Darklord.[1]

Misroi existed in this ghastly undead state, until he came across the Maiden of the Swamp, a hamadryad who personified life in the marshlands. Taking a misguided pity on Misroi, who she believed to be a Fey creature like herself, the Maiden instructed Misroi in the nature of the swamp, his domain, magics, and even the realm of Ravenloft itself. He also learned to cast any necromantic spell by employing the Dance of the Dead, and doing so with such control that his mastery of that sphere of magic is rivaled by few in the Demiplane. Misroi was able to reclaim his lost humanity through this arcane knowledge, but there was a tradeoff -- he was bound even further to the land, and cannot venture past the borders of the swamp surrounding his plantation home, save when it rains.[1] Compared to his original curse of his lost humanity, this new restriction doesn't seem to bother him as much.[4]

Current Sketch

One of his many powers is to scry across the entire Demiplane, and he prefers to set himself and his domain apart from it.[5]

Third Edition stats for Misroi, originally intended to be released in Secrets of the Dread Realms can be found in the Secrets of the Dread Realms Authors' Notes.

Loa

In the Voodan religion, Anton has inspired or been conflated with the Lord of the Dead[6]. He is seen as the greatest Loa and the lord of the pantheon. He is depicted as a walking corpse in old-fashioned but well-kept finery, and many Voodan ceremonies serve no purpose other than to appease him.
