Virundus[1] is the darklord and ruler of the Drowning Deep (and therefore Shay-lot). In life before coming to Land of Mists, Virundus was a great and mighty emperor who sought to not only become a god, but the greatest god, shunting out Oceanus, the Old God, and thus claim supreme power of his people. Virundus committed many atrocities in his pursuit of godhood and immortality, culminating with the sacrifice of no less than 24,000 prisoners and slaves.
For the above act of evil, Virundus became a deity of a sort, a bloated monstrosity so big he could not escape his throne room, and his city was taken below into the watery depths of the ocean. Although by and large helpless outside of his immediate vicinity, the Dark Powers have granted his wish of utter devotion. His people serve him with a faithful (if fearful) zeal, yet he is tormented by the thought that his weakness should be revealed to his worshipers.
Virndus has several goals. He seeks a way to end his curse - perhaps by killing the last of the Old God's faithful. He also seeks to spread the Church of the God Below throughout the Core and make everyone venerate him. To both ends, he seeks to flood the communities of the surface to bring them down into the ocean, or to lift up Shay-lot to the surface.
