Note: this article deals with the NPC named Bonespur. For the undead creature of the same name, see Bonespur (Undead).
Bonespur is a nonplayer character from the 2nd Edition module Thoughts of Darkness. In universe, he was a slaver and mercenary captain who worked with the mind flayers of Bluetspur.[1] His dark services to the illithids are later implied to have led to his demise in Forged of Darkness[2] and Gazetteer I.[3]
Biography
Bonespur was a giomorgo ("half-vistani") who grew up hated, beaten, and abused by all he knew until he became a loner and withdrew from society. While still a teenager, Bonespur tracked a band of Vistani to the edge of Darkon and even across the Misty Border. He eventually infiltrated their ranks and murdered them all in hate.[1] Despite being a giomorgo, Bonespur came to know several of the Vistani ways, including the ability to navigate the Mists. He became a skilled tracker, slaver, and kidnapper, able to locate victims for his illithid masters and bring them back to Bluetspur.[4]
Although withdrawn and abused when young, Bonespur gained a number of insidious allies in adulthood. He somehow gained the service of of an usually loyal "pet" nightmare.[5] He became the leader of the mercenary company, the Bone Daggers; his lieutenant Loie Hunn[3] was also his personal traveling companion.[2] Bonespur's services to the mind flayers of Bluetspur earned him a number of gifts from the illithids. Most notably, he had a psionic shapeshifting knife and a potent spellturning ring. The last was a personal gift from the High Master Illithid, but it ironically assured his doom. The ring bore a curse, to eventually transport its wearer to deep beneath Mount Makab to be absorbed by the Illithid God-Brain. It should be no surprise then that he eventually vanished without a trace.[2]
Following Bonespur's disappearance and seeming demise, Loie Hunn claimed his ring[2] and took over leadership of the Bone Daggers.[3]
In Thoughts of Darkness
Bonespur is a secondary villain and antagonist in the module. He leads various attacks on the player characters, tracks their movements, and uses deception and trickery to make them paranoid. However, he stays around for little direct fighting himself. His nightmare mount allows him to travel to the Border Ethereal, and Bonespur's Amulet of Chain Contingency keeps him from an premature death. However, it has limited charges, thus allowing the player characters a chance to eventually kill him.[6]
