Mistlings are Tiny, malicious aberrations that dwell within the Mists. Indeed, the Mist Subtype marks them as Mist Creatures. They lurk in dark and deep places and are always encountered with mist or fog. Although somewhat similar to gremlins, mistlings attack in swarm and drag away their prey into the Mists. Strange suckers on their abnormally large fingers allow a poison to be emitted that damages Strength.[1] Mistlings appear to have characteristics that aid in kidnapping. Their damp and cool skin appear to bear an adhesive nature, and their fingers are double-jointed.[2] They have been compared in appearance to albino frogs with abnormally long fingers.[3]

Mistlings have internal organs like normal creatures of flesh and blood, though their corpses dissipate into mist some time after being slain. According to Laurie Weathermay-Foxgrove, mistlings seem to exist primarily to kidnap those to be taken by the Mists, and she espouses that the mistlings were created by some unknowable intelligence with this purpose in mind. Gennifer Weathermay-Foxgrove disagrees, thinking mistlings to have adapted to life within the Mists and that they gain nourishment from creatures they kidnap.[4]

One legend relates they were a clan of Barovian laminak fey that were brought to the Demiplane of Dread when barovia became an domain. After Barovia's arrival, the Mistlings escaped into the Mists, where they became acclimated to.[5]
