James Martigan has experienced much tragedy in his life. Martigan's wife [[Megan Martigan]] died of [[disease]] when their daughter [[Sara Martigan]] was still a [[child]]. His daughter [[Sara Martigan]] lost the love of her life, [[Daniel Sherwood]], to a horse-riding accident. In her grief, she fell victim to [[the Phantom Lover]] despite the intervention of [[Dr. van Richten]].
