Tycho Geldnehar is a member of the [[:Category:The Fraternity of Shadows|Fraternity of Shadows]] that specializes in the geometry of space. He is the in-character avatar of [[User:Wolfglide|Wolfglide]]<ref>[[Quoth the Raven Issue 29]] pages 284-295</ref>.

Tycho has short, dark brown hair, and largely gray eyes, except for little inclusions of amber that radiate out from the pupil. The thumb of his left hand has lost the first and second phalanges. He tends to wear a gray waistcoat over a white shirt, which is tucked into black trousers that are in turn tucked into knee-high, black, leather boots, all under a cloak. He fastens a violet ascot about his neck, binds his cuffs with thin, silver chains, and wears two rings: a [[Collimation Ring|ring of clear crystal]], and his [[Fraternity of Shadows Signet Ring|Fraternity sigil ring]].

==Early Life==
Tycho's mother, [[Risidia Lonvem]], was the daughter of [[:Category:Faith_of_the_Overseer#The_Clergy|Witness]] [[Chiron Lonvem]] of the [[Faith of the Overseer]] in [[Martira Bay]]. At the urging of a [[midnight cat]] she was partial to, she absconded to [[Nova Vaasa]] out of boredom in [[728 BC]]. In [[Egertus]], she met the [[architect]] [[Agnar Geldnehar]] and fell in love. Within a year, they got married, and not long after found they had a child on the way.

Risidia did not want her child to be [[Darkon#Emergence_and_Azalin|Claimed]] by [[Darkon]], so she insisted on returning to Martira Bay to give birth. However, she had come to hate living in Nova Vaasa, and—after the midnight cat planted the idea in her head—planned to make sure Agnar remained in Darkon long enough to be Claimed himself. If he hadn't received word that one of his buildings was at risk of collapsing, the plan might have worked. Instead, Agnar left Darkon for a three week period after about two months, resetting the clock on his Claiming. He returned for the birth of his son Tycho in the summer of [[730 BC]], and was Claimed a month later, gaining the new identity Roric Voskan. This led to the uncomfortable situation of raising Tycho under the surname Voskan, despite the fact that official records gave his last name as Geldnehar.

In [[738 BC]], the midnight cat identified an exclusive educational program for Tycho, and suggested that Roric enroll the child in it. In the process of gathering the necessary paperwork for an application, Roric found the birth records listing his pre-Claiming surname as Tycho's last name. When Risidia could provide no explanation, he concluded that Tycho was not his son, and divorced Risidia. In [[750 BC]], Roric happened to cross the border of Darkon and regain his memories of being Agnar Geldnehar. He returned to Nova Vaasa, convinced that his former wife had bewitched him.

Risidia followed through on the program in the aftermath, and Tycho received a high-quality [[education]]. He came into adulthood as a [[polymath]], with skill in [[mathematics]], [[arcane magic]], and the [[violin]].

==Higher Education==
Tycho matriculated at the [[University of Il Aluk]] in [[748 BC]], and chose to study both mathematics and magic. He luckily avoided the [[Requiem]] while spending time with his family, and went on to finish his studies at the [[University of Il Aluk in Exile at Karg]].

A particular focus of his studies came to be the [[Lamordian]] [[Weltaulkügel]] and its geometrical implications, which seemed to be at odds with certain observable qualities of the world. The necessary mathematics to explore this was complex, which motivated Tycho to use magic to augment his central nervous system, becoming a human [[computer|computational engine]]. With this new aptitude, he amassed many models for reality, with the intent to use them to determine the geometric shape of the world.

==Lamordian Tribulations==
Tycho relocated to [[Lamordia]] in [[755 BC]] in the interest of meeting respected [[:Category:Cosmology|cosmologists]] who would be able to assist with his work. Among those he met was the astronomer [[Ruprecht Zährenner]], a member of the [[Syndicate of Enlightened Citizens]]. Tycho's scientific acumen was appreciated enough for Zährenner to grudgingly tolerate the [[wizard]], but this [[tolerance]] evaporated when Tycho fell in [[:Category:Love|love]] with Zährenner's daughter, [[Karola Zährenner|Karola]]. In response, her father built up enough financial pressure on Tycho that he had to leave Lamordia. He went to [[Dementlieu]] in [[758 BC]], where he became an [[adjunct]] lecturer at the [[University of Dementlieu]]. He made a number of secret returns to meet Karola for a few years after that, but Zährenner put a stop to it once Karola was found to be [[pregnant]]. Karola's marriageability was salvaged by passing off her daughter, [[Lisette Zährenner|Lisette]], as her newborn sister.

===Dread Possibility: Cat's Paw===
By making the midnight cat [[Hermitian]] his [[:Category:Familiar|familiar]] and [[Transmutation|transmuting]] him into a human with the ''[[Create Faux Henchman|create faux henchman]]'' spell, Tycho enabled the creature in committing greater evils. One of these evils, which Tycho further enabled with the gift of a ''[[hat of disguise]]'' was the fathering of Lisette Zährenner while impersonating Tycho. Tycho's childlessness is the least of the implications of this Dread Possibility, for there is little precedent for a human child with a midnight cat and wizard's familiar as a father.

==Work with the Fraternity of Shadows==
The Fraternity looked into Tycho back when he was in [[Il Aluk]], but he failed to notice the attention. With Hermitian's help, he became aware that he was being asked to join the organization in Dementlieu, and was inducted in late [[759 BC]]. He continued to work on his geometrical pursuits, with his focus shifted to using his models to identify where physical law leaves off and interference by the [[Dark Powers]] begins.

At some point in his work with the Fraternity, Tycho was sent on a classified mission to [[Forlorn]], where he lost his thumb to a [[goblyn]] bite.

Erik van Rijn is a former member of the [[Fraternity of Shadows]] whose spectacular falling-out with the Fraternity hierarchy is the event precipitating the Fraternity's in-game series of Gazetteers, as they search the [[Land of Mists]] for their former colleague. Frustrated by his inability to achieve the highest levels of the Fraternity, due to his being a [[transmuter]] rather than an [[illusionist]], he betrayed the Fraternity to the [[Unholy Order of the Grave]] in exchange for the secret of [[lichdom]]. He is now engaged in building a copy of the [[Doomsday Device]] invented by [[Azalin]] at the behest of [[Death (Lowellyn Dachine)|Death]], although he may have his own plans for the Device...

==Background==

Erik Van Rijn is not from [[Ravenloft]], rather he is an [[outlander]] originally from [[Gothic Earth]] ([[Amsterdam]] in the [[The Netherlands|Netherlands]], to be precise.) There he studied the arts of the occult and [[alchemy]]. He committed many [[evil]]s in his quest to develop the [[Philosopher's Stone]] and gain [[immortality]]. These ranged from [[embezzlement]] and [[grave robbing]] all the way up to [[murder]] and consorting with dark forces.<ref>[[Undead Sea Scrolls 2002]] p.29-30</ref>

Eventually Erik's depredations ensured his capture by [[the Mists]]. Delivered to [[Richemulot]], Erik joined up with the [[University of Richemulot]] and later [[the Fraternity of Shadows]]. A natural [[Shapeshifter|shapeshifter]], Charissa nevertheless has a preferred form. Described as a 'beanpole of a woman', this form is tall and unfashionably thin. Her hair is wild, red and curly. Her teeth have been filed to points. She wears a garishly mustard-coloured coat and hat over rust-tinted trousers and open-toed sandals. Her favourite weapon is an intelligent, magical saber named '''Maxwell'''.

==History==
After [[Mother/Madam Schlosser|'Mother']] decided to fill the void in her memory with knowledge at the [[University of Il Aluk]], the [[Fiend]] realized she would need money to pay for classes and resources. Rather than try to hold down a day job, 'Mother' decided to turn her hand to brigandage and theft. She conceived of a ferocious persona, a [[bandit]] who could wander the wild places of [[Darkon]], kill and steal to her heart's content, without anyone ever the wiser that she was the same person.

'Mother' created the guise Charissa wears unto today, and immersed herself in the role. She found it quite pleasing to wander about like an unpredictable scourge, leaving death and terror in her wake. To the [[Fiend|fiend's]] own surprise, her [[cursed]] mind split, creating a new persona that ''was'' the bandit: Charissa Schlosser.

After the split, the two personas came to an understanding, with Charissa continuing the work of banditry and gaining strength in combat. This persona would go on to become a [[Mercenary|mercenary]] for the [[Council of Brilliance]] (specifically for [[Josephine Chantreaux]]) in [[Falkovnia]], and has been a scourge in that [[Domain]] as well as [[Darkon]] and [[Lamordia]] for a very long time.

Charissa comes off as focused on bloodshed and profit above and beyond all other concerns. This is incorrect; as the second oldest persona and the one who acquires the funds the younger personas need to perform their studies and experiments, Charissa actually feels considerable responsibility for the whole [[qabal]]. In addition, she is an inventive and cunning combatant and a dedicated student in her own right. Katia Schlosser is the fourth oldest persona of the [[Tanar'ri]] [[Devoratrix]] known as [[the Red Haunt]]. This persona is first introduced in [[Quoth the Raven Issue 27]], [[The Conferences of Victor Gagné IV]].

==Appearance==
Although she is a natural [[shapechanger]] and should be capable of assuming any form she wants, Katia's 'default' guise has been subtly influenced by the preceding personas of the Red Haunt. Her fair-haired, aristocratic appearance strongly resembles [[Elise Mordenheim]] when she was still in the flower of health. Subtle differences persist; Katia's eyes tend to shift in colour between an icy blue and a cloudy dark, her lips a slash of red in her pale face even without the benefit of artificial colouration. In spite of her elegant, beautiful form, Katia prefers to wear a white doctor's coat, which comprehensively covers her in an entirely businesslike manner.

==History==
Katia was born when [[the Red Haunt]] ventured into [[Lamordia]] to study [[science]], after she believed she had gained sufficient mastery of [[arcane magic]] at the [[University of Il Aluk]]. Her studies focused on the medical sciences, but she also studied engineering and became the [[qabal|qabal's]] most versatile crafter of magic items and constructs.

Katia learned to dislike the Lamordians, considering them provincial and patronising due to the resistance she faced in their society as a woman seeking mastery of the sciences. She had to work twice as hard as any male student, not only to attain the grades she wanted, but also to silence the many people who kept telling her that her ambitions were 'unbecoming of a woman'. Even upon graduating with flying colours, Katia was dissatisfied with what she had learned, and sought fresh sources of knowledge.

Katia eventually managed to gain an apprenticeship under [[Victor Mordenheim]], and for a time she was actually content to study under the mad doctor; Mordenheim accepted no limits to scientific study, which suited her just fine. Her contentment led to resentment of the other personas with whom she shared a body, and Katia tried to monopolize the body and repress the other personas. In her obsession with science, she even neglected to feed -- and the other personas took action.

Due to the interference of 'Mother' and her older 'sisters', Katia's 'default form' started to gradually resemble Victor's wife Elise, as she had been before her confrontation with [[Adam]]. Predictably, Victor decided to use her body as a vessel for Elise's brain -- a notion Katia picked right out of his mind in [[688 BC]]. Also predictably, the [[Fiend]] erupted in fury. Katia assaulted and fed on Victor, torturing him to the point that he forgot what happened, then abandoned [[Schloss Mordenheim]] and founded her own hospital in [[Leidenheim]]. Eventually, the Red Haunt's past caught up to her in the person of [[Boyce Vinctus]], and Katia was forced to abandon her life in Lamordia.

==Personality==
Katia is brilliant, focused, merciless and remorseless. Although she is a skilled physician and a brilliant scientist, these are not qualities anyone should appreciate in their doctor. She is also prideful to the point of arrogance, capable of bouts of intense cruelty when anyone angers her, and has no respect for any part of the natural order she has been studying. For every person whose life she has saved, she has conducted unspeakable experiments on another, and she is known for research into the grafting of undead flesh onto the living.

Unlike her former mentor, Victor Mordenheim, Katia considers [[arcane magic|magic]] to be just one more tool in her toolkit to unriddle the universe. She is the most proficient among the Red Haunt's personas in the creation of magic items, and is one of the two 'sisters' responsible for creating the host of [[homunculus|homunculi]] that provide security at their main [[Lair|lair]], [[The Retreat|the Retreat]]. One of her most ambitious lines of [[construct]]-related research is meant to free her of the need to share a body with her 'sisters'; Katia hopes to one day craft a [[golem]] body capable of hosting her personality and matching the power of her natural form.

An unusual (for a [[Fiend]]) quirk of Katia's is the fact that she appears to suffer from a situational fear of contamination. When performing her research, she is perfectly willing to get her hands dirty with any number of unpleasant substances, and she appears to enjoy the [[blood]] of people she is [[torture|torturing]]. Outside these situations, however, she abhors physical contact ranging from melee combat to simply shaking another person's hand in greeting. She has been shown to unapologetically wipe her hand with a disinfecting cloth immediately after shaking a patient's hand.

===Before Starting on the Doomsday Gazetteers===
Most of what is known about "S" is from her own in-character writings in the [[Doomsday Gazetteers]].

In the account told by "S", her [[:Category:Mother|mother]] died giving birth to her in [[Darkon]]. Her [[:Category:Father|father]] attributed his [[:Category:Wife|wife's]] death on "S". In addition, he believed that "S" was not his biological [[:Category:Daughter|daughter]], but an illegitimate child. This wedge distanced and alienated father and daughter from each other. "S"'s father sent "his little cuckoo's egg" off to distant schools as soon as he could. Although beginning elementary education in [[Nartok]], she finished primary and secondary education at [[Dementlieuse]] boarding schools. Here she made her first acquaintance with [[arcane magic]], as a fellow student who would join the [[Societe de Legerdemain]] - [[Gaston Delapont]] - would demonstrate his growing skills to her.

"S" returned to Darkon to pursue higher education.<ref name="Gazetteer III p. 4">[[Ravenloft Gazetteer III]] p. 4</ref> She received degrees from both the [[Brautslava Institute]] and the [[University of Il Aluk]]. Although the [[source|sources]] have not provided details on what her degrees were in, "S" claimed she possessed "a wide range of expertise on matters both [[magic]]al and [[:category:Sociology|sociological]].<ref name="Gazetteer II p. 4">[[Ravenloft Gazetteer II]] p. 4</ref>

At some point, S entered into an arranged [[marriage]] and gave birth to a single, unnamed [[:Category:Daughter|daughter]]. Comments by the authors not recorded in the Gazetteers indicate her [[:Category:Husband|husband]] considered "S" to be [[:Category:Intimidating|intimidating]], and was happy to let her do whatever she wanted. This implies they did not have any shared interests, giving the unnamed husband time away from "S". It is unknown whether the two were currently divorced or still officially [[:Category:Married|married]] at the start of the Doomsday Gazetteers. {{Spec|As "S" had no mentioned source of income prior to her employment by [[Azalin]], it is not impossible that she still received a stipend from her estranged spouse, or even that they still lived together for (her) convenience's sake.}}

On top of her formal education, "S" conducted a five year independent study of [[Necropolis]] and [[the Requiem]]. This led to her daughter turning into a ghoul herself. In addition, she stumbled upon her husband's [[diary]] and learned about some of his secrets about the purpose of their marriage. Grown bitter and spiteful, Bethany recruited and [[manipulated]] her [[:Category:Son|son]], [[Clarence Stone]], to start a campaign of burning paranoia to purge the world of [[sin]]. This little spark was enough to make the [[witch]] craze spread to other neighboring towns such as [[Salem]]. Bethany's final act before entering [[Ravenloft]] was slaying her own child [[Katherine Stone]] in cold blood for trying to stop her friend from getting hurt.<ref>[[Undead Sea Scrolls 2002]] p.298-299</ref>

Upon becoming darklord of Stonewall, Bethany was transformed into a [[harpy]]. However, she can make her wings come and go, so if she wears baggy clothing she can pass for [[human]]. However, that is not the end of her torment. She has become [[cursed]] to lose control of her children one by one whether through [[death]] or alienation. In addition, the [[victim|victims]] condemned by her fabrications do not pass on peacefully. ==Break to Tragedy==
When her then-fiancé and future brother-in-law had the argument that caused them to disown each other, Giselle accompanied Hans when he left for the [[Balinoks]]. The two got married and conceived their children while living in [[Teufeldorf]], barely more than paupers in spite of Hans working constantly to provide for the family.

Tragically, it was her husband's work that would destroy what happiness the family had. Hans's research into the [[:Category:Bogeyman|Bogeyman]]-legends caused those [[evil]] creatures to draw near. Giselle never believed her children when they tried to tell her about the monsters, believing them to have been frightened by Hans's telling of the legends. When children started to disappear in Teufeldorf and she saw her children become more and more scared, she did discuss a return to [[Ludendorf]] and a possible reconciliation between Hans and Jakob with her husband.

Sadly, the Bogeymen finally found a way to get at the children before the family could depart. Giselle was first to see the carnage wrought in the children's bedroom by [[The Scissorman|the Scissorman]], who had [[murdered]] poor, innocent Liesel. This, combined with the traumatised state of Oscar, broke Giselle's mind.

Even though Hans finally moved the family back to Ludendorf, and Jakob rushed to his side to help care for him, Giselle's shattered sanity would not mend itself. She was confined in the [[Chateaufaux]] [[asylum]], as was Oscar. In the current age, if Giselle is still alive, she is a [[Lost One]] who is usually kept under sedation. She will never leave the asylum.

==Background==
Aleister was born into [[:Category:Smythe Family (of Dementlieu)|the Smythe family]], a bloodline already strongly involved with the Fraternity of Shadows. His father [[Michael Smythe]] and grandfather [[Alois Smythe]] practically forced him to join the secret society, when Aleister would have preferred to become an artist, a professional scribe or even a [[Warlock]] of [[Hala]].

Aleister did not enjoy his time in the Fraternity. Due to a relative's conniving, his career was sidelined and he was reduced to running messages all across the [[Core]] for superior Brothers, as well as performing fact-checking and verification tests for others' research. As a result, he at least became a practised horseman and [[sailor]].

Aleister's life took a sudden turn for the positive when he made the acquaintance of a [[shapechanger|shapeshifting creature]] in [[Sithicus]]. The creature named itself [[Livia Hemlock]]. Surprisingly, the two of them hit it off to the point that they developed genuine romantic [[love]] for one another. Eventually they were married, creating a well-matched union. Livia even helped jumpstart Aleister's career in the Fraternity with her superior social skills, but Aleister was more than ready to tender his resignation from the group when the two of them discovered Livia was pregnant.

In due time the couple's child was born: a healthy son, whose existence filled Aleister's life with unexpected extremes of joy - until the baby was [[poisoned]] in his crib. Livia left Aleister, fearing that the [[infanticide]] had been a warning shot of sorts from the Fraternity, which she suspected had discovered her non-human ancestry.

Aleister sank into a numb depression, performing his duties mechanically until he made the acquaintance of a very different shape-shifter during one of his journeys. [[The Red Haunt]] introduced Aleister to the [[Scions of Irul]], in whose company he felt more at home than among his supposed Brothers in Shadow. While he understood the Fraternity would kill him if they discovered his dealings with the Scions, Aleister continued; at least among the Scions he was able to stimulate his mind, swapping lore. From context, it is clear that he was among the Scions who were ousted when [[Tressac]] seized control of the group.

In [[748 BC]], Aleister received a missive from the Red Haunt, asking for his assistance in founding a new group. She made it clear that she wanted Aleister to speak on the nature of the [[Dark Powers]] and the [[Demiplane of Dread]] - secrets jealously guarded by the Fraternity. In return, Aleister would be able to join the Centurions' apocalyptic quest for [[Cosmic Necromancy]] and ascension to power. In full awareness that doing this constituted betraying his oaths to the Fraternity, Aleister cooperated with the [[Fiend]], becoming a co-founder of the [[Centurions of the Night]].

==Current Sketch==
Aleister maintains a dual membership in the [[Fraternity of Shadows|Fraternity]] and the [[Centurions of the Night|Centurions]]. He is loyal to the second group rather than the former, and maintains his Fraternity role so he can spy on the Brothers in Shadow and feed his fellow Centurions important information.

There is little joy left in Aleister's life. He deeply misses his wife and is still enraged over the murder of his child. What keeps him going is a deep-rooted desire to destroy the world that has brought him so much pain, then build a new one where he can bring his little family back and they can be happy together for eternity.

While he still serves as a messenger in his role as a Fraternity Brother, Aleister is now trusted to copy potent spells created or found by Brothers locally, then transfer them to a central archive. By surreptitious copying of some of these spells into his own [[spellbook]], as well as gifts from his fellow Centurions, Aleister has amassed a fairly impressive collection of his own.

In addition to reasonably potent [[arcane magic|magic]], Aleister also has access to armed and unarmed combat skills, as well as the unique offensive and defensive powers of a Centurion of the Night. He is not a careless combatant, and prefers to thoroughly stack the deck in his own favour before he makes a move. He is accompanied by a [[raven]] [[familiar]] named [[Gruorg]].

Aleister retains his [[faith]] in [[Hala]] in spite of his apocalyptic ambitions, and it gives him comfort. He believes the world he inhabits is sick and in need of healing - and if that requires amputation and sterilization before the healing process can begin, then so be it.

Against all odds, the Red Wizard and the [[Fiend]] grew '[[Love|fond]]' of each other to the point that they elected to flee Toril and hopefully escape Shar altogether. Agents of the goddess caught them in the depths of the [[Plane of Shadow]], and Girin suffered mortal wounds.

As part of a backup plan Girin and the [[Demon]] had concocted, they channeled her soul into a magical ring set in the Devoratrix's navel, which exerted a protective effect against negative energy. The plan called for the Devoratrix to conceive a child and channel Girin's [[soul]] into it, allowing her to be reborn.

Unfortunately for Girin, the [[Mists]] came for her demonic companion, who came to be trapped in the [[Demiplane of Dread]]. Through twists of fate, the Devoratrix [[curse|cursed]] herself and lost all her memories, including those of Girin.
