Introduction
In narrative conflict there is man versus man, man versus himself, and man versus nature. Few domains embody the last like Fallaya Basin, where the very land is the enemy.

Biology
The Fallaya Basin is home to a vast array of wildlife including hippopotamuses, swamp hippos, great hippos, skimmers, alligators, swamp manatees, curiously large wading birds, and herbivorous and carnivorous turtles large enough to support buildings on the back of their shells.

Vegetation is less remarkable though a number of carnivorous and fruit bearing plants are present in the deep swamp.

Geography
Rivers from the north cut through the land, merging before reaching the sea. There are a number of small lakes and large ponds throughout the land. While a number of larger lakes and ponds as well as the main river channels are fairly stable, the deeper swamp is a languid, ever changing place.

This part of the swamp is best described as a large body of standing water containing a large number of moving islands and shifting accumulations of mud and muck. The drifting islands often begin as trapped gases formed by decay at the bottom of the water lift rafts of silt and half decayed plant and animal matter to the water’s surface. Though initially small, those islands that survive at the water’s surface for very long begin to accumulate extra organic matter and can swiftly become large and dense enough to support people walking upon them. Those islands that survive long enough may even eventually begin to host vegetation with significant root systems that may eventually anchor them in place. These drifting islands mean that localized areas of the swamp may form channels of moving water of close off previously open bodies of water from one day to the next.

Population Distrubtion
add to me

One curious feature of the Fallaya Basin is the number of people living on shanty boats throughout the domain. These shanty boats are inhabited by nomadic individuals or families engaged in fishherding, hunting and trapping, or other methods of living of the water. The settled people universally refer to the boat dwellers as fishherders. Though there are rumors of half-elves and elves living on shanty boats, few people can claim to have seen any non-humans engaged in this lifestyle. These humans are often rumored to have Vistani ancestry, but while their language does feature a few Vistani words any Vistani ancestry seems to have come from a forgotten time.

In the deep swamp there exists a small tribe of elves as well as more numerous grung.

Towns
* Fallaya
* Flood Town

Authority
Darklord
*the Swamp Shambler

Temporal Ruler
There is no ruler of the Basin as a whole, though some within the Basin have carved out territories that they control:

*A secret society within Fallaya of druids that seek to find the key to controlling the Swamp Shambler.
*Beauregard DuBlon, a were-crocodile thug that prowls the waterways and roads
*Djorji Herne, a darkling alchemist cursed to transform into a heron during the day and is a man every evening until sunrise. He searches for a cure for his affliction, believing the Shambler can lead him to the natural ingredients needed to make him fully human again.
*"Mayor" Redd rules the criminal haven of Flood Town unopposed.
*The Golden Hand is a "finder's shop" based in Fallaya run by a curious retired gnome pirate, Johnny Beetlefoot, who claims that they can and will find anything, if the fee is right.
*Amongst the many inbred clans throughout Fallaya Basin are those claiming that the reason for their unnaturally familial ways is to preserve a pure, sacred, royal bloodline, thousands of years old. Several different families claim to be maintaining the same bloodline, making them heirs to the kingdom, but whether or not this kingdom ever even existed, nobody knows. There are, however, a trio of gentlemen who have been spotted searching the Fallaya Basin swamps on horseback, trying to find the inheritors of this royal bloodline. Their leader, Stefan le Prince, wishes to marry his daughter Claudia to the truest male heir, so that he might rule through their child. If female member of the true royal clan is found, Stefan plans to marry her himself.

Language & Culture
add to me

Those Fallayans who live on shanty boats claim to be descended from people who moved to the area from Chelleuax. Indeed their language does seem to be mostly the same as that of Chelleaux with added words from the Vistani language as well as words of uncertain origin. These people value the freedom afforded them by their boats and look down on townsmen as people to scared of danger to embrace life.

Those Fallayans who live in settlements speak a different language.

Adventure Hooks
* The Swamp Shambler searches for a woman in a vague understanding of marriage. Periodically women are abducted from the roads and waterways, and sometimes from the streets of Fallaya itself, to be lost within the swamps forever, or even worse, to become the Shambler's bride. Young women are warned to never sing as they pass between Fallaya and other towns for fear the Shambler will hear.

* Rumor has it there is a music box, lost somewhere within the moors of the Basic, that can control the Swamp Shambler itself.

* A collector from the Core of fine art has heard rumor of many lost pieces of art in Flood Town and is willing to pay heavily for these objects to be transported back, if they do exist.

* "Mayor" Redd is growing restless with his town of criminals, and has his sights set on Fallaya. He wants to sink it as well, and is looking to find a way to anger the Swamp Shambler enough to do it for him.

*The deep swamp is home to a number of carnivorous plants, some which use poisons to kill their prey. Shady individuals might pay highly for samples of these poisons.

*Occasionally, a lucky fishherder will discover small amphibian figures made of silver or gold. These have fed rumors of a previous fallen grung civilization. The fishherders have begun congregating around the settlements. Some from the deep swamp speak of the grung acting with more purpose than usual, and a few even claim to have seen a ziggurat rising above the treees.
In narrative conflict there is man versus man, man versus himself, and man versus nature. Few domains embody the last like Fallaya Basin, where the very land is the enemy.

Biology
The Fallaya Basin is home to a vast array of wildlife including hippopotamuses, swamp hippos, giant hippos, skimmers, alligators, swamp manatees, curiously large wading birds, and herbivorous and carnivorous turtles large enough to support buildings on the back of their shells.

Skimmers are highly unusual beholderkin found in Fallaya Basin. A skimmer can grow to the size of a normal beholder. Skimmers superficially resemble beholders in that they move through flight and are spherical with a central eye and a mouth. However, the resemblance ends there. Skimmers have no eyestalks and instead bear four tentacles with two growing out each side of its body.

Skimmers are omnivores though they primarily subsist on plant matter such as grass, fruit, and waterplants. They gather food by flying just above the ground or surface of the water and using their tentacles to gather food and place it in their mouth. This habit of skimming above the water’s surface is what earned them the name skimmer from the fishherders. Skimmers will often gather fish and other small animals on accident while eating, and this makes up most of the meat that they consume though they are known to chew on the corpses of animals they kill.

While beholderkin, skimmers are no more intelligent than a clever dog, and their behavior reflects this. They will gladly spend most of their days grazing contentedly if left to their own devices and mainly concern themselves with their next mouthful of food. However, they are solitary creatures and are prone to aggressive outbursts if animals approach too near to them just like hippopotamuses. As hippos and skimmers share overlapping habitats and equally aggressive dispositions, it is not uncommon for the two animals to fight. Hippos win most of these engagements, and it is not uncommon to see skimmers missing one or more tentacles as a result. They are known to tolerate other skimmers if there is a great abundance of food, but this is rare.

Skimmers have some natural camouflage ability, and a skimmer’s skin will slowly change color over a few hours to match its surroundings. This camouflage will do little to hide it from humans or other intelligent creatures, but it does help protect skimmers from being attacked by predators.

A skimmer’s greatest fear is becoming unable to fly. This is rare though it is known to happen to skimmers that eat heavy objects such as wood, shells, or bones. Skimmers have some instinctual knowledge of this, and indeed this is critical to the skimmer life cycle. A skimmer that dreams of a meal that might make it fall to the earth will dream of having a companion to share this meal with, and it is through this process that a new skimmer will be dreamt into the world. This new skimmer will also be created asleep. The two skimmers will usually drift apart in their sleep though they will attack each other if one awakes with the other nearby.

The great hippo, also known as the great hippopotamus, is a possibly extinct species of hippopotamus in the Fallaya Basin. The great hippo is similar to the hippopotamus though much larger and significantly more aggressive. Notably, they also lived solitary lives as opposed to forming herds like the hippopotamus. The great hippos size and temper made it a considerable threat to boats and structures near the water.

Great hippos were always rare, but it has been decades since the body parts of one have been seen in markets. Despite this new rumors of sightings are heard each year. The great hippo’s large size causes it trouble moving around outside of the open water of the rivers and open ground of the surrounding flood plains, and its great appetite restricted its range to areas adjacent to open fields and meadows.

The teeth of great hippos can be worked into flutes that produce sounds of unusual clarity and tone that is said to even be addictive to certain individuals. These flutes are exceedingly rare, and a new one or even a tooth that could be worked into one would fetch a high price.
Hippos usually spend their days lounging partially or entirely submerged in bodies of water while coming ashore at night to feed. Hippos are voracious creatures, and even a lone hippo can easily devastate a garden or field in a single night. In addition hippos can wreck havoc on structures such as fences, walls, and small buildings as well as small trees by rubbing against, leaning on them, or trying to climb over them.
In Ravenloft, hippos are found in Fallaya Basin though in lesser numbers than in the past. Once common enough in the main rivers to impede navigation, their numbers have been greatly reduced, though it is still not uncommon to find small herds or individuals near the banks of the wider sections of the river. They are now most commonly found in the outer regions of the Deep Swamp. These outer regions provide relatively easy access to more solid ground on which to graze while the shallow, shifting waters provide some protection against human hunters whose larger boats have difficulty maneuvering in the shallow swamps. In addition grung hunters venture into these areas less often than they do the interior parts of the Deep Swamp

Though dangerous prey, hippos continue to be hunted in the Fallaya Basin. An adult hippo yields several hundred pounds of edible meat, a hide that can be tanned into a thick leather, and bones and organs which can be sold for uses both ameliorative and less savory. More than all this though the teeth of the hippo are one of the few sources of ivory in Ravenloft, and as such are valuable even in their raw form though worked bits of hippo teeth are rarer and more valuable still. Amongst the fishherders and the settled people of the Fallaya Basin there exist a few craftsmen capable of working hippo teeth into bits of scrimshander and flutes.
hub
Part of the Hub.

Introduction
In narrative conflict there is man versus man, man versus himself, and man versus nature. Few domains embody the last like Fallaya Basin, where the very land is the enemy.

Biology
The Fallaya Basin is home to a vast array of wildlife including hippopotamuses, swamp hippos, giant hippos, alligators, swamp manatees, curiously large wading birds, and herbivorous and carnivorous turtles large enough to support buildings on the back of their shells.

Towns
* Fallaya
* Flood Town

Authority

Inspiration
The land evokes both southern gothic stories and exaggerated stereotypes (read: archetypes) of the deep south, including Deliverance. The hippopotamus, more commonly referred to as the hippo, is a large semi-aquatic mammal. Hippos range in color from almost pink to nearly black though most are a deep purple. While generally peaceful, hippos will become violent if attacked or approached too closely. They are deceptively fast in the water and on land, and this combined with their large size leads most predators and people to give them wide berth. In addition hippos sport four large teeth giving them a vicious bite capable of seriously wounding or killing most creatures their size or smaller.

An adult hippo yields several hundred pounds of edible meat, a hide can be tanned into a thick leather, and bones and organs which can be sold for uses both healing and less savory.

Also referred to as the fair folk, elves constitute members of a long-lived race of humanoids that as a whole has a strong connection with nature yet is also steeped in magical lore. They tend to have an appreciation of elegance, art, and beauty as well as knowledge, but these appreciations are tempered by reclusiveness and a general wariness to the outside world. As with other nonhumans, elves face bigotry and prejudice in many Ravenloft domains outside of Darkon and Sithicus. Therefore, elves in the Demiplane of Dread even more withdrawn from contact with nonelves than they are on worlds on the Material Plane. As they can often pass for humans, elves may nonetheless be encountered within the Demiplane more commonly than some other nonhuman races despite the elven trend towards isolation from the outside world.
High elves constitute the vast majority of elves found in Ravenloft, although wild elves represent a small minority of elves in Sithicus. Although Arak was said to be plagued by drow from underground, this is (and was) a mistaken perception; the true inhabitants of Arak was an entirely unrelated race of fey more properly known as shadow fey. Despite some perceptions nonelves may have of the elven people as immortal fey creatures, elves are still fully mortal (if very long-lived).

Elven Homelands in the Demiplane of Dread
Although has been said that Ravenloft has no native elves, elves have two primary homelands in the Demiplane of Dread: Darkon (primarily in the Mistlands towns of Neblus, Nevuchar Springs], and Sidnar) and Sithicus (where elves uniquely make up the majority of the population). The elven cultures of these two lands are seemingly distinct and separate Drow may be found in the underground regions of Darkon (primarily in the Mountains of Misery and possibly the Mistlands), and wild elves of a stone age cultural level can be found in the wilder regions of Sithicus.

Outside of Darkon and Sithicus, elves make up a small but notable minority in Falkovnia (1% of the population), Keening (1%), Necropolis (5%), and Fallaya Basin (<1%). However, in Falkovnia, elves will either be hidden from view or enslaved, whereas in Keening or Necropolis elves will only be encountered as undead. In Fallaya Basin the small tribe of elves live freely in the deep swamp where they rarely encounter non-adventurers aside from the grung.

Description
Elves tend toward slim builds with angular and fine features. One of their most notable features is their elongated, pointed ears. Though taller than some other humanoid races, elves are often smaller than humans. The delicate build of elves lends itself towards dexterity] and grace more than physical hardiness. Despite a lesser trend toward physical hardiness than humans and some other humanoids, the elves may show a superior resiliency against mental trauma and madness.

The elven appreciation for the fine and elegant is reflected by the clothing and accessories they wear. Elves on the whole prefer clothing made from light, delicate material (such as silks or satin) and pastel in color. (There are some seasonal variations in color for Darkonian elves, whereas Sithican elves prefer more muted colors). Elven tastes are also reflected in the gear adventurers use, with elven adventurers most often using fine blades such as the rapier and lighter armors. For the most part, elves disdain firearms for their noise and messiness,.

Outcast Rating
Under Third Edition rules, elves have a base OR of 3.

Elven Vampires
Despite their rarity in Ravenloft, there is a vampiric strain specific to the elven race known simply as the elven vampire. This is not to say that all elves that become vampires become this specific vampire strain, but that all members of the elven vampire strain are elves. Jander Sunstar is an example of an elf that is a vampire but not of the elven vampire strain.

Despite being uniquely attuned to activity at day rather than at night time, elven vampires live wretched lives. Unlike most vmapires, elven vampires are highly disfigured by a transformation of distorted features and exaggerated looks of torment. As such, elven vampires live as outcasts. Elven vampires suffer the curse of the black thumb, which makes their touch wither any plants they come into contact with. This trait enrages creatures so finely attuned to nature, and elven vampires usually come to hate nature rather than loving it.

Some Notable Elven Individuals
*Lady Adeline, chief tax collector for Baron Urik von Kharkov
*Alanik Ray, famous detective formerly of Darkon, now of Dementlieu
*Angel Pajaro, opera singer
*Easan the Mad, darklord of Vechor

However, in Falklovnia, elves will either be hidden from view or enslaved, whereas in the latter two cases elves will only be encountered as undead.

*Jacinth Moontide
*Jander Sunstar
*Jameld of Hroth, monster hunter
*Mason of Har-Thelen, resister to Azrael Dak's rule
*Lord Soth's 13 Banshees
*Trillen Mistwalker, explorer with an accursed reputation
Part of the Hub.

Introduction
In narrative conflict there is man versus man, man versus himself, and man versus nature. Few domains embody the last like Fallaya Basin, where the very land is the enemy.

Biology
The Fallaya Basin is home to a vast array of wildlife including behemoths, hippopotamuses, swamp hippopotamuses, alligators, swamp manatees, curiously large wading birds, and large herbivorous and carnivorous turtles large enough to support buildings on the back of their shells.

Towns
* Flood Town

Authority

Part of the Hub.

Introduction
In narrative conflict there is man versus man, man versus himself, and man versus nature. Few domains embody the last like Fallaya Basin, where the very land is the enemy.

Biology
The Fallaya Basin is home to a vast array of wildlife including hippopotamuses, swamp hippopotamuses, alligators, swamp manatees, curiously large wading birds, and large herbivorous and carnivorous turtles large enough to support buildings on the back of their shells.

Vegetation is less remarkable though a number of carnivorous and fruit plants are present in the deep swamp.

Towns
* Fallaya
* Flood Town
Authority

The Fallaya Basin is home to a vast array of wildlife including hippopotamuses, swamp hippopotamuses, alligators, swamp manatees, curiously large wading birds, and large herbivorous and carnivorous turtles large enough to support buildings on the back of their shells.
