Their bodies shift in an expression of their inner nature. The change is not permanent, but it takes much longer to reverse than the time that it has been in effect. Isolde keeps the Twisting in check by force of will. By ceasing this effort and letting the fury of her reality wrinkle loose, she creates the [[The Abominations|abominations]]. Equally, Isolde can, by a partial and precise loosing of her hold, engage in deliberate works of [[fleshcrafting]], such as the restoration of [[Silessa]] to an [[elven]] form. Isolde is not troubled ethically by the Twisting. She deems it to be perfectly appropriate that one's appearance expresses one's true nature.

[[Professor Pacali]] has studied the Twisting and learnt too late that its effects are reversible. He guards this knowledge jealously.

A infamous [[Vistana]] [[dukkar]] who forsaw the [[Grand Conjunction]] and wrote a poem of six lines known as Hyskosa's Hexad describing the events that would precede it.

For a time (during the events of [[From the Shadows]]), Hyskosa was [[imprisoned]] in the [[dungeon]]s of [[Castle Avernus]]. He may or may not have become a [[spirit]] to deliver his [[prophecy]] to [[agent]]s who were to fulfill it.<ref name="FTS p.19-20">[[From the Shadows]] p. 19-20</ref>

Although Hyskosa was perhaps the greatest (or at least, the most well-[[known]]) of all the [[Vistani]] [[seer]]s<ref name="FTS p.19">[[From the Shadows]] p. 19</ref>, he had no special [[combat]] or [[spellcasting]] abilities to speak of.<ref name="FTS p.21">[[From the Shadows]] p. 21</ref>

The '''Three Hags of Tepest''' are [[Laveeda]], [[Leticia]] and [[Lorinda]]. They are sisters. Their family name was Mindefisk. They are the joint [[Darklord | Darklords]] of [[Tepest]]. Their home lies at the heart of [[Wormwood]].<ref name="Ravenloft Gazetteer V, p166">[[Ravenloft Gazetteer V]], p166.</ref>

Each of the sisters is a competent practitioner of hag magic;<ref>[[Darklords (Sourcebook)|Darklords]] p.41</ref> together they excel at the brewing of horrifying potions. Prominent among their crimes is the creation of [[Blackroot]], through the awakening to consciousness and foul twisting of a great oak using such elixirs. The sisters seem also to be very competent with scrying magic. Indeed Azalin commissioned the equivalent of a ''[[crystal ball]]'' from them, in the form of a crystal shard.

The sisters stoke the fires of the [[Tepestani Inquisition|inquisition]] so that they can harvest the corpses of those whomever it condemns.

Apart from goblins, [[S]] is one of the few beings to see one or more of the Three Hags in their natural form and escape to tell the tale. <ref>[[Gaz V]], p?</ref>

The sisters created the [[Tincture of Midnight]].

Because they are fond of showing their superiority, the hags are also fond of riddle competitions, which may buy prospective [[victim]]s needed time to escape.<ref name=dlp43>[[Darklords (Sourcebook)|Darklords]] p.43</ref>

Oubliettes are pocket locations in the [[mists]]. They are small islands that contain any type of environment and structure, and appear and disappear randomly. They are typically uninhabited, and can either be a sanctuary or a dangerous place.<ref>[[Van Richten's Guide to the Mists]]</ref>

Oubliettes range from small rooms to pastoral meadows to entire towns, usually devoid of any other life. Some are harmless, some have mild dangers, some are set up like traps. Like [[mistway|mistways]], they may require a trigger or condition to appear or be entered. [[Mist Creature|Mist Creatures]] have been known to take up residence in them.

It has been pointed out that oubliettes violate the existing topological rules of the the Demiplane (i.e. anything that is carved out of the Mists has a Darklord). But it has also been pointed out that [[The Black Box]] raised the possibility that [[The Nightmare Lands]] had no darklord, and also that there are strips of land on the edges of the Black Box map of [[The Core]] that are not labelled as domains and not assigned darklords. In addition, [[The Mists]] themselves could be seen as land without a darklord, if in fact they are truly a physical location at all.

As related by a [[bard]] from [[Curriculo]], a [[Invidian]] man once sought out a [[doll]] to gift to his child one [[night]], only to stumble upon a seemingly closed [[toy shop]] that nonetheless had a [[candle]] flickering inside. The man loudly rapped upon the door which opened of its own accord. The toy shop was cold and seemingly empty, yet the man found a [[doll]] and, feeling a push to get the gift and leave, left payment for the [[toy]] and took it to his daughter. The next morning, he found that his daughter had seemingly [[transformed]] into a doll very much resembling the one that he bought. When he returned to the toy shop, it was gone. Richten Haus is the childhood home of [[Dr. Rudolph van Richten]] which was originally located in [[Darkon]], before becoming an [[Island of Terror]] hidden away in the [[Mists]].

==Background==

Rudolph van Richten enjoyed a happy childhood here. It was abandoned after he struck out against a [[Vistani]] caravan that took his son after he was unable to save one of their own, and the caravan was killed by van Richten with the assistance of [[undead]] lent to him by [[Azalin]].

The Vistani caravan returned as [[ghosts]] who wandered the Mists, eventually coming across the home of van Richten. The tribe's [[raunie]], [[Madame Radanavich]], chose to inhabit the place and became its [[darklord]], and over the years prepared to lure back van Richten for a final showdown.

With the aid of adventurers, van Richten was able to defeat (but not destroy) Radanavich. He chose to stay behind at Richten Haus, in order to keep her spirit contained.

When that failed due to the intervention of heroes, he betrayed his master in [[736 BC]], becoming darklord of [[Gundarak]]. After the [[Grand Conjunction]], he was granted his own domain, [[Dominia]], where he currently resides in the his [[Asylum for the Mentally Disturbed]].<ref name="Red Box p. 62">[[Ravenloft Campaign Setting: Domains and Denizens]] p. 62</ref>

In life a gifted and highly respected (but secretly [[corrupt]]) [[alienist]] seeking a [[cure]] for his family's hereditary [[madness]], Heinfroth accidentally became a [[Cerebral Vampire]] after transfusing himself with the cerebrospinal fluid of one of Gundar's would-be [[:category:Vampire Companion|brides]]. Duke Gundar just about destroyed Heinfroth in retaliation. However, Gundar held back his ultimate wrath when he learned that Heinfroth's blunder left the doctor under Gundar's sway.<ref name="Bleak House: Heroes, Monsters, and Settings p. 9">[[Bleak House: Heroes, Monsters, and Settings]] p. 9</ref>

In [[735 BC]], Heinfroth conspired with his lover [[Akriel Lukas]] to overthrow [[Harkon Lukas]]<ref name="Bleak House: Heroes, Monsters, and Settings p. 9-10">[[Bleak House: Heroes, Monsters, and Settings]] p. 9-10</ref> and [[Duke Gundar]] and usurp power in their respective domains. To accomplish this task, Heinfroth and Akriel planned to use the [[Crown of Souls]] to create an [[army]] of [[goblyn]]s and provoke a [[war]] between [[Kartakass]] and [[Gundarak]]. According to this [[conspiracy]], Akriel and Heinfroth would use the distraction caused by the war to sneak in and take out Duke Gundar and Harkon Lukas.<ref name="Feast of Goblyns p. 13">[[Feast of Goblyns]] p. 13</ref>

Although Akriel truly loved Daclaud Heinfroth, his love for her was merely a [[deception]] for the true conspiracy with his master, Duke Gundar. After faking Gundar's death, Heinfroth would use Akriel's aid in destroying her father and then kill her in turn. Heinfroth planned to rule Kartakass alone as an ally to Duke Gundar.<ref name="Feast of Goblyns p. 13">[[Feast of Goblyns]] p. 13</ref>

Heinfroth and Akriel hatched their scheme in [[736 BC]]<ref name="Domains of Dread p. 17 n1">[[Domains of Dread]] p. 17, as described in [[Feast of Goblyns]]. In the wake of the failed Gundarakite Conspiracy, Heinfroth demonstrated he was [[loyal]] to no one. So enabled, the adventurers dispatched Gundar, leaving Heinfroth as the darklord of Gundarak. Heinfroth ruled that land in a neglectful fashion. Heinfroth's rule of Gundarak last for merely four years, ending in the the face of [[the Grand Conjunction]]. Though Dominia was little more than Heinfroth's new [[Asylum for the Mentally Disturbed]] and the ground surrounding it, Heinfroth was largely satisfied with it. With [[the Mists]] bringing in more test subjects, Heinfroth's experiments grew ever more depraved in the years that followed. Some time before [[750 BC]]<ref>[[Bleak House: Homecoming]] p. 3 places the event of the events of [[Bleak House: The Death of Rudolph van Richten]] module in this year.</ref>, [[the Dark Powers]] rewarded Heinfroth's terrible acts by making Dominia a [[Core domain]]<ref name="Bleak House: Heroes, Monsters, and Settings p. 10">[[Bleak House: Heroes, Monsters, and Settings]] p. 10</ref> in the [[Sea of Sorrows]].

Heinfroth benefited greatly from the "upgrade" in his domain's status. He invited [[Dr. Piotr Rehner]], an old associate from [[Gundarak]], to join him on [[Dominia]]. There, Rehner proved his dedication by agreeing to [[transformation]] into a cerebral vampire Moreover, Heinfroth gained the service of an able [[Ship's captain|ship captain]], [[Captain Ridg Baykur]] after Heinfroth rescued the [[shipwrecked]] Baykur and made him into a cerebral vampire.<ref name="Bleak House: Heroes, Monsters, and Settings p. 12">[[Bleak House: Heroes, Monsters, and Settings]] p. 12</ref>

[[Madame Radanavich]] and [[Baron Metus]] eventually came to Heinfroth with conspiracy on their minds against [[Dr. Rudolph van Richten]]. More specifically, to ruin van Richten's mind, body, and [[soul]] before finally ending his life.<ref name="Bleak House: Heroes, Monsters, and Settings p. 16">[[Bleak House: Heroes, Monsters, and Settings]] p. 16</ref> Heinfroth cared little for Metus or Radanavich's plans, but he was pleased to have Dr. van Richten as a test subject. His sanity undermined by the nightmares brought by Metus, Dr. van Richten came to The [[Asylum for the Mentally Disturbed]] for treatment. He instead found [[torture]] as Heinfroth [[gaslighted]] him.<ref name="Bleak House: Heroes, Monsters, and Settings p. 4">[[Bleak House: Heroes, Monsters, and Settings]] p. 4</ref> [[Adventurer]]s freed van Richten, though he met his final in the battle against Madame Radanavich in [[Richten Haus]] in [[750 BC]].

Thanks to the power of [[propaganda]], Heinfroth is thought of not only as a respected healer of the mentally ill but a truly [[saint]]ly benefactor of those in his care.<ref>[[Bleak House: Sea of Madness]] p. 67</ref> However, Heinfroth knows on some level he is a [[fraud]], for the few he has actually [[healed]] with his [[cerebral spinal fluid]] [[transplant]]s sooner or later decayed into states of utter [[madness]] followed quickly by [[death]]. Over his appearances in several Ravenloft products, there have been a few minor discrepancies in Heinfroth's profile.

Both Feast of Goblyns<ref name="Feast of Goblyns p. 13=14">[[Feast of Goblyns]] p. 13-14</ref> and the Red Box list Heinfroth as a [[standard vampire]] with a simple proclivity for cerebral spinal fluid.
