Jester of the FoS:

These are the rules for creating and adding content for the Fraternity of Shadows' ongoing crowd-sourcing Mistipedia project.

The goal of this project is to add adventure hooks and content for the newly published 4th Edition domains as well as creating new domains to hopefully one day rival those of the Core.
This project is based around the Hub, a large cluster of diverse domains, a second Core elsewhere in the Mists.

The Rules
1. Add to the established domains. We would prefer to have fewer well-detailed domains rather than dozens of sparsely described lands. Feel free to add people, places, and hooks as well as expanding on the existing content.

2. Add and try not to replace or revise. Try not to erase someone else's ideas. While not every idea is gold, try and make them work before revising or altering.

3. Add the best, not the most. Add your best ideas first, your A-material. Don't add extra content just to add extra content, and don't feel the need to write as much as possible just to fill gaps. Something someone else writes might inspire you later, and you can always add more.

4. Be creative. Seriously. Wow us.

FAQ
What is this?

We're making new domains and expanding on seldom-touched domains.

Who can participate?

Anyone and everyone. Well... anyone and everyone who likes Ravenloft and has a rudimentary understanding of English.

What can I add?
Anything you want, other than new lords and lands. Want to name and add a city? Do so. An NPC or organization? Sure. A monster or adventure locale? Sure, as long as it fits.

I don't know anything about "domain X". Where did "domain X" come from?

Only Al Kathos, Graefmotte, Histaven, and Monadhan are previously published domains. Chelleaux, Fallaya Basin, Giddim, and Mourning Pyre are brand new. If you've read the description you know it all!

Why do this?

Partly to add some new places and stories to Ravenloft , partly to draw attention to the Mistipedia, and partly to do something with the 4e domains.

Can I add my homebrew domain/ darklord?

Not at this time.

We're focusing on already published domains, either official or created by the Fraternity of Shadows. When we expand into brand new domains these will likely be additional creations of the Fraternity. We might eventually hold open calls or add polls for more domains, but this will be much later.

Why did you induce "domain X" instead of "domain y?

Domain selection was based on one of three criteria:

1) publication in the online Dragon magazine

2) featuring a campaign setting not featured yet

3) does something different with its darklord

Could you include "domain Z"?

If there's a really cool fan domain that wows us, has a unique hook, and could be expanded on we'll consider it. But the author has to be on board with the idea and excited about letting strangers play with his toys.

Can I add my homebrew domain, if I change it into a generic location with a villain instead of a darklord?

If it works as a location. Lands that are a one-note idea might work better as a location than a tiny Island of Terror. An adventure hook rather than a full land.

My awesome idea doesn't fit the lands. Should I add it anyway or change it to make it fit?

We would prefer ideas fit and complement the lands. Not every idea has to fit perfectly, as there should be some variation in the lands, but don't try and squeeze an idea into a land not suited for it. If you want to change or tweak your idea that's fine, or you can wait and see if a future land fits better.

Alternatively, you can add your idea to any other domain as long as you mark it as homebrew content.

Why does it say "more to come?"

We're not starting with all our ideas at once, and instead we will be tricking out content over the next few months. This is partly so we can establish and fine-tune the basics before releasing the content, and partly to not overwhelm people at the start. We want people to focus on what we have first before expanding.

If the current domains do not inspire stay tuned and more will come; maybe the next land will get your creative juices flowing.

How much experience is required? I want to participate, but I don't know how to use a wiki.

It's easy. When editing a page (see the tabs at the top of the window) there are buttons that help with formatting. If you can write on a Message Board you can write for a Wiki. The site itself has some examples in the Help section. And other helpful contributors can always come along and fix your formatting later.

Jester of the FoS:

A former religious organization in the undead infested land of Mourning Pyre, the Midnight Riders has become something else.

Background
The Church of the Midnight Sun was created some ago by two childhood friends that managed to survive the Creeping Death. Initially it was set up as a haven to other survivors in the form of survival caches: spare equipment left at marked locations (much like the rangers of old), along with basic handwritten survival manuals (what was edible in that specific area and what was not, hunting/trapping techniques, shelter construction, etc.) along with instructions on how to contact and locate other Church of the Midnight Sun members. The efforts of the Church's founding members was a gradual payoff: soon enough the organisation's membership swelled. People from all walks of life join the ranks and continued the work of finding and sheltering other survivors. But in a land like Mourning Pyre, circumstances oftentimes dictate moral north, and the first crack appeared in the Church of the Midnight Sun.

One of the founders, a man now known only as "Church", became more interested in the strength of the Church of the Midnight Sun. Over time he became dictatorial, even tyrannical. His vision of the Church became more and more militant while the other founding member, a man later to become known as "the Wanderer", held fast to the original idea of the Church: to help those in need survive and rebuild. Inevitably, the two idealists clashed. Some sided with the Wanderer, many sided with Church, and so the Wanderer was outed. Exiled. But Church is not a man of small victories. Fearing what every tyrant fears, he sent out his best scouts to find the Wanderer under the false pretense of mending their friendship for the betterment of the Church of the Midnight Sun. Wary but hopefull (the Wanderer knew his split with Church wasn't so cut and dry, that fear voted more often than heart), he returned to reconcile...only to find Church and his elite waiting in ambush.

Left for dead, arrows sticking from him like a pin cushion, the Wanderer sank to his knees and prepared to die. Church and his brutes walked away with smirks and laughter. Death was creeping. Claiming...

With their leader dead, the rest of the Wanderer's Renegades (as they were known), were hunted down and given the choice: join, die, or become living death. The self-annointed warlord Church would later rename the Church of the Midnight Sun to "the Midnight Riders", named both for their nocturnal activities and the fearsome steeds his elite ride during such "outings". Survival of the fittest indeed.

Current Sketch
Over time, legend of the Wanderer became more myth than anything. A lone man looking for a cure, a warlord opposed to the salvation offered by the Midnight Riders, an outlaw, a nobody. Eventually, all but a few forgot. The Midnight Riders rode, scavenged, plundered, and "saved". A neccessary evil when facing the Creeping Death.

More recently, rumours broke through the Riders' laydowns. Somebody was again building survival caches and leaving behind handwritten bills detailing survival techniques and signing them "The Church of the Midnight Sun". Church is said to be fuming. His scouts are looking for more than supplies and "recruits", and some aren't reporting back. Independant communities are being interrogated, but are offering up no leads. The Midnight Riders are quietly preparing for war, fully expecting an opponent imbued with self-righteous wrath.

And hordes of ravenous undead roam the countryside, oblivious to the schemes of men...

==Current Sketch]]

Mourning Pyre comes from the world of Eberron. It is loosely inspired by the fallen nation of Cyre, and its darklord given life by the Day of Mourning. Mourning Pyre has much of the magical technology of Eberron, but in the years since the Creeping Death rose much of it has fallen into disrepair.

Jester of the FoS: /* FAQ */

Current Sketch
Manipulative and cunning, Ellieth despises humanity as weak and easily tempted by base desires. She revels in exposing people's weakness: revealing flaws, secrets, lies, and self-deceptions. Another favourite tactic is turning close-knit groups against one another, moving from body to body until friend turns on friend. Once she has control of a host she can freely move from body to body, providing the new host is sleeping or otherwise vulnerable.

The longer Ellieth stays in one body the quicker it burns out, so she seldom stays for too long in one host. Ellieth is vulnerable in a host body; if her host dies it is unknown what will happen to her spirit, which might depart with the host soul. She makes sure to only make her presence known when she is in possession of a host unlikely to be killed outright.

Curse
Ellieth just wants her own body again. She was once a succubus and enjoyed the sins of the flesh, directly tempting humanity. While adept at manipulation, Ellieth is a demon at heart, and misses abandoning subtlety for brazen murder and destruction.

She also finds herself vulnerable to the strength of humanity. If cast out of a host she is rendered bodiless and powerless for some time, unable to take control of a human unless invited in.
Mademoiselle Guillotine is not a single guillotine, but all guillotines. Sentient and thirsty for blood, she can influence people around her, driving their mania. She can exaggerate their thoughts and emptions, and occasionally push the suggestible into action.

As much of an idea as a real object; as long as people fear "Mademoiselle Guillotine" she has power. However, she has no direct influence with no guillotines present.

Curse
Powerful yet impotent, Mademoiselle Guillotine can only influence those nearby a guillotine. Without the current civil unrest she would quickly lose influence. The more unrest spreads to surrounding villages the more bodies she has and the more lives she can take, but also the more chance she runs of killing the last noble and potentially ending the fervour.
Fear reigns in Chelleaux. The revolution has been raging for half a decade, with governments overthrown and aristocrats hunted across the countryside. Traitors all meet their end at the same place: at the blade of Mademoiselle Guillotine. Aristocrats and nobles hide as best they can, sheltering themselves in manors or moving across the countryside while a few try and buy safety or collaborate.
These new lands will stretch what it means to be a darklord, offering an alternate look at evil and villainy.

Additionally, the project will incorporate the new domains published for 4th Edition and a number of brand new domains. While these fit less into the theme of "different darklords" something should be done with that content and those lands.
Full rules are found here
Created by the Day of Mourning, it was once a simple living spell of animate dead. As it raised corpses into zombies, it gained some of their sentience, becoming a thinking being. Greedily, it sought out more dead, raising abominations and spreading across the region. The Dark Powers took notice and drew the Creeping Death into the Mists.

Jester of the FoS: /* FAQ */

Why do this?

Partly to add some new places and stories to Ravenloft , partly to draw attention to the Mistipedia, and partly to do something with the 4e domains.

Can I add my homebrew domain/ darklord?

Not at this time.
We're focusing on already published domains, either official or fan-created. When we expand into brand new domains these will likely be creations of the Fraternity of Shadows. We might eventually hold contests to add domains, but this will be much later.

These are the rules for creating and adding content for the Fraternity of Shadows' ongoing crowd-sourcing Mistipedia project.

But feel free to add people, places, and hooks as well as expanding on the existing content.

2. Add and try not to replace or revise. Try not to erase someone else's ideas. While not every idea is gold, try and make them work before revising or altering.

3. Add the best, not the most. Please don't add content just to add content. Try not to feel the need to write as much as possible just to fill gaps. Add your best ideas first, your A-material. Something someone else writes might inspire you and you can add more later.

4. Be creative. Seriously. Wow us.

FAQ
*What is this?
We're making new domains and expanding on seldom-touched domains.

*Who can participate?
Anyone and everyone. Well... anyone and everyone who likes Ravenloft and has a rudimentary understanding of English.

*Why do this?
Partly to add some new places and stories to Ravenloft , partly to draw attention to the Mistipedia, and partly to do something with the 4e domains.

*Can I add my homebrew domain/ darklord?
Not at this time.
We're focusing on already published domains, either official or fan-created. When we expand into brand new domains these will likely be creations of the Fraternity of Shadows. We might eventually hold contests to add domains, but this will be much later.

*Why did you induce "domain X" instead of "domain y?
Domain selection was based on one of three criteria:
1) publication in the online Dragon magazine
2) featuring a campaign setting not featured yet
3) does something different with its darklord

*Could you include "domain Z"?
If there's a really cool fan domain that wows us, has a unique hook, and could be expanded on we'll consider it. But the author has to be on board with the idea and excited about letting strangers play with his toys.
We're focusing on already published domains, either official or fan-created. When we expand into brand new domains these will likely be creations of the Fraternity of Shadows. We might eventually hold contests to add domains, but this will be much later.

Seriously. Wow us.

FAQ
What is this?
We're making new domains and expanding on seldom-touched domains.

Who can participate?
Anyone and everyone. Well... anyone and everyone who likes Ravenloft and has a rudimentary understanding of English.

Darklord of Giddim, Ellieth was once a succubus and is now a bodiless presence. For a short time she can inhabit the forms of other mortals, taking possession of their bodies to sow unrest and tempt mortals.

Background
add to me
