Deep in the deserts of Har'Akir, the Oasis of Apep presents a seemingly wonderful relief from the terrible desert heat. In actuality, it is a horrible trap; the water is highly poisonous to humanoids, and the oasis is infested with fiendish poisonous snakes and carnivorous plants. Worse, it is the lair of Am-khaibitu, an undead yuan-ti cleric that engineered the corruption of this former majestic site by engineering the mass murder of the priests of Osiris.

The 4th edition version are what was originally called a "High Elf" in the original version of Dungeons & Dragons. They look like tall elves with eerie green and blue eyes and usually live in a magical forest land away from all other peoples, even humans. However, some of them materialize in the game worlds if they have been sent on a mission.

Isolde is the only known Eladrin residing in Ravenloft, and she is the leader of the Carnival. She came to the evil realm after the Gentleman Caller and had protected people who have fallen victim to his seductive powers. Originating in 2nd Edition, her backstory establishes her as the celestial version, not the modern fey version, of an Eladrin. Using her in a 4th or 5th edition campaign would require allowing both versions to exist, changing her race to another celestial creature, or significant changes to her backstory (or simply ignoring the nitpicking details).
Senmet's ultimate goal was (and may still remain) to usurp the power Anhktepot has over the domain of Har'Akir. Over the course of ToD, Senmet conspires with Isu Rehkotep, the woman who made him one of the undead, to achieve power over Har'Akir. Though Isu thinks Senmet to be her minion, he actually manipulates her for his own purposes.

Background
Before Anhktepot's fall from grace, Senmet was already a corrupt priest. He rebelled against Anhktepot and sought to claim power over the then prime material plane Har'Akir for himself. However, Anhktepot discovered Senmet's schemes and ordered his secret abduction, after which he was mummified and entombed alive. In order to keep his realm secure, Anhktepot covered up Senmet's treachery and murder by casting him as a martyr and a hero.

Centuries later, Senmet was awakened from his slumber of death and bound into service by Isu Rehkotep through the use of a potent magical scroll. It contained nothing less than Anhktepot's own recipe for the creation of the Children of Anhktepot. As a young priest of Osiris, Isu had found and attempted to destroy the scroll, but this proved to be beyond her capacities. Her initial exposure to the scroll planted a seed of desire for dark power that ultimately corrupted her and brought her into the secret service of Set. Isu foolishly believed Senmet was under her complete control, but Senmet was fact only minimally bound by Isu Rehkotep. In truth, she could only hold power over him for but a few brief moments in any one day. Senmet bids his time, gathering power for an attempt to usurp Ankhtepot's power.

Senmet implemented several ideas in preparation for his scheme. In 738 BC, Senmet visited the werejackal priests of the secret Temple of Anubis seeking an alliance against Anhktepot. Before the werejackals could be of much use, a horrible fire consumed all those inside, save for the young Abu, who fled into the Mists.

Senmet's other preparations perhaps seemed more successful, albeit highly costly, for a time. Through some unknown means, Senmet relinquished his spellcasting abilities for the ability to create desert zombies and a limited mastery over Har'Akir. Senmet's scheme hinged on the acquisition of worshipers, both in Muhar and beyond. Their faith would allow him to accrue enough power to challenge Anhktepot without awakening him prematurely. To this end, Senmet used his partial control over Har'Akir to draw in new potential worshipers and keep the borders closed to escape attempts. He also manipulated Isu into subverting the faith of the Muhar villagers. Although she wished to slowly indoctrinate them into the Cult of Set, Senmet wished to make himself their (false) deity. In preparation for his attempted coup attempt, Senmet conceived of, and raised, many desert zombies, a lingering gift that the people of Har'Akir could have lived without.

The above developments bring the start of Touch of Death. Although individual details are not spelled out, the fulfillment of the 3rd Verse of Hyskosa's Hexad happened in in 738 BC (and the continued existence of Anktepot as darklord) demonstrates Senmet's plan ultimately failed. Indeed, his defeat is called out in ToD itself.

Ravenloft Monstrous Compendium I & II leaves Senmet's exact fate uncertain, handing it over to the player characters and Dungeon Master to decide, though some suggestions are made should he survive. Although left entirely open in MCI&II, Senmet still lives and wanders the deserts of Har'Akir according to Domains of Dread

Role in Touch of Death
Ironically, Senmet's call of outlanders into Har'Akir is what brings the player characters and Dulcimae's Family into Har'Akir at the start of the module. As Senmet discovers the player characters and their Vistani allies are more trouble alive than dead, he conspires with Isu Rehkotep for their demise. Senmet orders his multitude of desert zombies to kill the PCs.

Senmet also particularly wishes the capture of Dulcimae, for her abilities as a seer represent a threat to his plans. The desert zombies eventually capture Dulcimae. Senmet transforms her into a standard mummy, though her unquiet spirit reveals Isu's corruption to the PCs in retaliation. At this point, Senmet removes his protection from her and leaves her to her fate.

As the module winds to a close, the player characters are harried by attacks from both Muhar's villagers and Senmet's zombies. By default, the module ends with a massive confrontation between Senmet and Anhktepot at Anhktepot's Tomb.

Current Sketch
Provided Senmet still lives, he still wishes to rule a nation of his own. His ambition may eventually take him to other lands such as Sebua or Kalidnay, or the Dark Powers may award him with a domain (and curse) of his very own.

Chronology
725 In Har’Akir, Isu Rehkotep (a young priestess of Osiris) discovers a hidden, ancient scroll which details the foul rites to animate one of the Children of Anhktepot. Horrified, she attempts to destroy the scroll, but it will not burn. She hides it away, but the knowledge of its existence slowly corrupts her.

738 Isu Rehkotep, now converted to the worship of Set, raises the traitorous priest Senmet as one of the living dead. Together, they begin a plot to take control of Har’Akir.

738 Senmet recruits the werejackal priests of Anubis to aid him in his plans to usurp control of Har’Akir. However, that very night, a mysterious fire wipes out the entire priesthood, except for the young Abu al Mir. Abu flees, and the Mists transport him to Nova Vaasa.

738 Senmet’s plot to overthrow Anhktepot is foiled; Ankhtepot’s 7th awakening. The third verse of Hyskosa’s Hexad is fulfilled. Senmet survives the failure and flees into the Mists.

Tsuu-Y-Teke is a hot and dry domain where the merciless sun shines brightly most of the day with only a brief respite for a twilight like time in the middle of where night would occur for other realms. The realm is dominated by deserts and other similarly arid terrains. Numerous caves and tunnels dot the mountains and other places of raised elevation in the realm.

The predominant people are the Inan. They reside in pueblo dwellings cut into the canyons. Most Inan engage in one or more of the following activities to make a living: hunting, farming wheat, shepherd. or craftsmanship. Virtually all trade is done through barter. The people depend upon the Cult of the Sun Puma to preserver their culture through adverse conditions, maintain a sense of right and wrong, and aid in cultural rituals such as celebrations. The Inan decorate themselves in tattoos that signify social position, age, rank, and important milestones in life.

The Inan tend to shun outsiders and others who are marked as strange, for they fear that such persons could be Kuni-Bina, spirits shrouded in false guises in order to bring down catastrophe more easily.

A small number of people dwell in the caves normally shunned by the Inan. These people belong to the Cult of the Vulture God, the enemies of the Cult of the Sun Puma and the Inans. A few humans belong to the cult, but the majority are actual vultures.

Tsuu-Y-Teke formed when Heresa Heri, the Vulture King, murdered Kananciwe and cursed the Inan and the Sun Puma for taking away "his" prize of the sun. But with such a curse, the Vulture King made the Sun Puma lose his grip on the sun, making it linger in the sky forevermore. As he tried to escape the newly accursed sunlight, he was destroyed by its burning rays. His followers retrieved his body and mummified it, thus preventing him from having to become one of the Kuni. Later, Heresa Heri found that he rose from the dead as a mummy and as the darklord of Tsuu-Y-Teke.
Tragathos is a strange realm locked in eternal dusk. It is a small archipelago of three islands enveloped by a warm sea. Each island is home to at least one settlement, as follows :

*East Island of Tragathos
**Hispaleia- pop 2,000

*South Island of Tragathos
**Sirinthe- pop. 4,500

*West Island of Tragathos
**Calloponikki- pop 3,500
**Ponthalos- pop. 3,500
**Tragos- an abandoned ghost town, but formerly home to 8,000

Language and Culture
A significant portion, perhaps the majority, of the Tragathians have physical features approaching the ideal human form. They tend to remind others of their beauty and fitness very often. Those who do not conform to the standards are ostracized and made into outcasts.

The creation and pursuit of beauty, perfection, and the ideal representation is vital to other areas of Tragathian life. The laws as represented by the Constitutions are quite harsh, but they seem to be effective in minimizing crime. Creating and appreciating beauty in both physical form and performance is also a priority.

Foreigners and Imported Technology
Travelers to this realm find that their equipment and technology is transformed to conform to the technological and style standards of a Classical (4) Cultural Level and Tragathian culture.
Thorn Hollow was a medieval city on the Material Plane that was, so legends say, was the object of a constant power struggle between three barons. Their fighting brought constant strife and civil war to the city. A powerful witch became angry and thus cursed the barons, imprisoning each one of the barons souls in one of the Shards of Light.

The Shards lingered on in in this state for millennia before they were stolen by necromancer and immortal wannabe Malachi Nately and stored within his laboratory just outside of Thorn Hallow. The Shards contested Malachai's will for dominance enough that he botched the conjuration of a gelugon, which broke free and ultimately destroyed Malachai along with his laboratory. The Dark Powers seized the lab and surrounding environs and brought them into the Mists, making the Shards of Light the co-darklords of the realm.
The Twilight Zone is a strange, amorphous domain hidden within the Mists. The land itself is a barren, almost featureless wasteland. However, it is usually shrouded in forms that represent places that represent things of importance to those who enter (or are captured by) the Zone. Unlike many domains, the Twilight Zone is not shaped in a way to reflect the darklord, rather it is subjectively morphic to match the expectations of those who wander into (or are dragged into) this realm.
Nearly every domain knows some version of the apparition called the Headless Rider. It appears as a mercenary in dark armor in Mordent, a ghostly cataphract in Har'Akir, and a mutated centaur in Lamordia, but in each incarnation certain details remain true: the rider is missing its head, it appears upon a prominent bridge, and it decapitates victims as it endlessly searches for its own head. Should someone escape an encounter with the Headless Rider, they might find a different domain on the opposite side of the spirit's bridge.
Geography
Despite having several communities, the Kingdom of Fairhafen is mostly a rural land. The Rätsel Mountains loom over most of the rest of the domain, and the Sneedronningen looms the Rätsels as the range's highest peak. The eerie and foreboding Black Forst dominates the eastern and northern borders of the mountains whereas a more peaceful, bucolic set of plains dominates the western and southern border of the mountains. Svanereden Lake lies to the southwest, it is fed by the Wichtelmänner River and several other lesser streams that run in from the Black Forest. The terrain of Fairhafen is beautiful and breathtaking during the day, but at night the domain takes on much more of a menacing and sinister appearance.

Marschensloss Castle is the residence of the royal family. Since Queen Avarein's ascension, it seemingly had all vestiges of merriment stolen from it. The castle overlooks Dornröschen (a town of 2300 people) in the Rätsel Mountains. Aschenputtel (pop. 8,200) lies on the Svanereden, and Rotkäppchen (3,600] hugs the southeastern border of the Black Forest. Schneewittchen is a dwarven village (700) that straddles the border of the Rätsel Mountains and the Black Forest.

Government
Eons ago the royal family of Fairhafen made a pact with the gods to rule fairly in return for dominion over the land. For generation upon generation, the royal family upheld a system of feudalism, but one where the excesses of the aristocracy were reigned in. With the death of King Drosselbart and the permanent incapacitation of his daughter Princess Rosenbriar, this has enabled Queen Avarein to take the throne as Princess Rosenbriar's regent. (Queen Avarein is the second wife of King Drosselbard and stepmother to Princess Rosenbriar.) The Queen has attempted to alleviate the hassles of rulership on herself by affording more petty powers and responsibilities to the nobles. This has enabled them to come to abuse their stations like never before. However, in matters of greater importance, the Queen is the exact opposite. She has demonstrated that she rules with an iron fist

Society and Culture
Travelers from foreign lands are likely to find the denizens of Fairhafen more vibrant than the people of some of the drearier domains. This both because of the Fairhafener style of dress (very colorful) and responsiveness to foreigners (polite and welcoming). Queen Avarein calls for all newcomers to her land to be brought to her castle, but the commoners typically help travelers elude such detection.
The plantation and the surrounding environs have fallen into disrepair. Vermin, filth, and disease have overtaken the land its denizens.
Few denizens of the domain will bother travelers who venture forth to this cursed land. However, a toxic black sludge surrounds the island, preventing exit. In effect, the borders of the domain are by default closed all of the time. The only way out is an unnamed bridge that has fallen apart. Sir Edmond must actually concentrate for it to reform, in effect taking the mental burden to open the borders rather than close them. The Cathedral of the Damned is a grim edifice covered with the iconography of fallen celestials and other images that are both angelic and horrific to behold. The first occupants of the Cathedral, the priests of some unknown faith, fell to corruption, and the Cathedral has been tainted ever since. Wolves and worgs patrol the ground outside. Geodomonias, described as "winged vampires" stand watch over the Cathedral like gargoyles, but they are unrelated. Geodomanias become active at night.

A century following the corruption of the original inhabitants, a mad vampire came to the Cathedral. Driven more by dark desire than reason, he has conducted several blasphemous experiments, including a werebat zombie that has somehow managed to maintain its intelligence. The young paladin Thoris Tregart south to avenge his murdered father, but he himself was murdered. One fan made the Cathedral a pocket domain located inside a remote part of Mordent. The people of Dorsit know of the Cathedral and curse it, thinking it home to a powerful fiend. This rumor is partially true. Whereas no demon, devil, or the like infests the cathedral, there is a mad elven vampire named Christian and his two dread golems, "Werebat" and Billie Bonez. In addition, the place is haunted by the ghost of a former priestess, the Dark Mother Miranda. Despite these threats, the greatest menace in the Dark Cathedral is the Beast of the Cathedral. The Beast seems merely a horrific monster, but she is actually a cursed human woman named Lady Karalyn Valkyrie. She was transformed by the Dark Mother and forced to destroy her lover and adventuring companion, Andros Valkyrie. It is described as a adaption to Ravenloft in Ustalav Gazetteer in QtR22. ==Placement in the Core==
As a dread alternative to the canon placement of the Shadow Rift as an open gash in the surface of the Core, the Ustalav Gazetteer places the domain atop the Shadow Rift, with certain caverns leading down into the Rift.

Differences from Golarion's Ustalav
Ustalav on Golarion is a much larger nation than the domain of the same in the Land of Mists. Ustalav in Ravenloft is much smaller, small enough to cover the Shadow Rift but no further. While Golarion's Ustalav boasts thirteen regions, Ustalav in the Land of Mists has only 8. Moreover, in the Land of Mists, the religious upheaval caused by the death of Aroden (known as the Forgotten God in Ravenloft) resulted in an almost complete displacement of Ustalav's native religions by faiths from the Land of Mists (most notably the Church of the Lawgiver, but also the Eternal Order, Hala, and Ezra). Cleric NPCs and other religious devotees may, unlike their Golarion counterparts, thereby belong to one of Ravenloft's faiths.

Although many events in Ravenloft Ustalav's history mirror those in Golarion Ustalav's history, the dates and exact details of Ravenloft Ustalav's history is often quite muddled and inconsistent. This is due to the nature of the demiplane in general and the curse of Ustalav's darklord in specific. James Weylan, a driven historian and leader of Ravenloft's Pathfinder Society, wishes to catalog the history and geography of the world, but the fickle Land of Mists torments him with its incoherent past.
