Roja is an NPC and the primary antagonist of Hour of the Knife, though he is only encountered at the end. A Dread Doppelganger, Roja is now head of the Mulor clan. He resides in the Bloodhaven Estate in Paridon. For a time, he claimed the Fang of the Nosferatu and attempted to depose Sodo as lord of Paridon, but his plan failed.

Biography
Roja was the illegitimate son of one of the Bloodsworth Family and a doppelganger of the Mulor Clan posing as a servant of the family, Roja grew up snubbed by the family as most children born out of wedlock are. After finding his true nature, Roja murdered and replaced Sir Edmund Bloodsworth (Human), his half-brother and patriarch of the Bloodsworth Family. Roja enjoyed the irony of dominating the family that formerly spurned him. Years of control have caused Roja to truly think he is Sir Edmund with only a vague memory that there ever used to be a separate human by that name.

Roja served Sodo (the darklord of Paridon<ref name=" until the year 742 BC, the year Sodo chose him to be the next Bloody Jack. The siren call of the Fang of the Nosferatu proved to be too seductive, and Roja attempted to usurp control of Paridon from Sodo by using the Fang of the Nosferatu to Gain Invulnerability for 13 years by killing six people on six successive nights. However, his plot ultimately failed.

In Hour of the Knife
In HotK, Roja has betrayed Sodo by attempting to gain the benefits of the Fang of the Nosferatu for himself rather than committing Murder-by-Proxy for Sodo's benefit. Bardan, Roja's huntsman, procures Roja's victims, prostitutes and escorts that Roja murders one each night until the climax of the adventure at Bloodhaven Estate, where the players encounter him at a social gathering where he plans to kill his sixth and final victim.

During the adventure, Sudji assumes the identity of Inspector Andrew Logan in order to obfuscate Roja's involvement and arrange assassination attempts on the player characters.
Canon Information
As originally presented in Ship of Horror, Meredoth was the darklord of an Island of Terror domain called Nebligtode. This domain was actually a large body of water with several islands within it. The most notable of these islands were Todstein and Graben Island. Meredoth festered like this in Ravenloft for over a century before the Grand Conjunction happened. The Dark Powers have diminished his aging to to but a snails pace, but the years are still creeping up on him.

As of the then current timeline presented in Domains of Dread, Meredoth became the Darklord of the Nocturnal Sea, the eastern sea of the Core. The Nocturnal Sea contains several new islands in addition to the landmasses that were once belonged to Neblingtode, but these new islands (and the water immediately surrounding them) have their own darklords.

Domains of Dread also retconned Meredoth as originating from the world of Mystara. On that world, he was a baron of Norwold, a province of the Alphatian Empire. As a baron, Meredoth could never find as much time alone for his magical research as he wanted. After he poisoned the starving colonialists who merely begged for his aid, a storm rolled in and drew him into Ravenloft.

Meredoth is responsible for poisoning the Graben Family and reanimating them as lebendtod, initially merely to have someone keeping the flow of body parts coming. However, since their initial reanimation, the Graben family and their spawn have become some of his primary minions.

Meredoth has also created a number of snow golems and even developed several magic spells that deal specifically with snow. He used the spell Transmute Snow to Stone to manipulate the rock and permafrost that forms the bedrock of his home on Todestein.

Noncanon Information
Netbook-CanonThe Nocturnal Sea Gazetteer proposed that Meredoth is the darklord of only Nebligtode, the area of the sea immediately surrounding and including Todstein and Graben Islands. The sea itself was was reimagined as a separate domain known as The Drowning Deep.

Meredoth was born to a pair of talented and wealthy wizards in the Alphatian Empire in the outlander world of Mystara. Unfortunately, he received precious little nurturing from either of them. His father was an obsessive constructcrafter with no time to spend upon child who was instead entrusted to the care of golems and their like. And his mother was a self-absorbed enchanter who found it least bothersome to discipline her irksome child through the use of enchantments.

The Alphatain Empire was a magocracy and Meredoth met this parents expectation by demonstrating an aptitude for magic which would ensure his eventual membership in its nobility. The child was drawn in particular to necromancy which was held to be as valid an avenue of research as any other in free thinking realm. In his early teens, Meredoth watched her mother addict herself to the drug tsongha and withered away within a span of a few months. The conclusions that he drew from his childhood were that the flesh was weak and was to be disdained, that arcane craftsmanship could improve upon nature and so was to be valued, and that entities capable of perfect obedience were alone worthy of trust.

The young necromancers's time in school only reinforced these conclusions. His brilliance was recognized and gave his peers reason to overlook his oddity and instead court his goodwill. Soon enough a false friend stole his ground-breaking research into a variant skeletal golem. Meredoth retaliated by addicting him to tsongha. It was a ploy that he would use repeatedly, with the difference that it was now he who stole the work of others, confident that they plotted to do no less to him. In addition to necromancy, Meredoth honed a talent for destructive evocations which served him very well in spell-duels with those who dared question his "honour". Picking his fights carefully, he at once slaked a violent nature that his father had derided as plebeian and claimed rightfully as spoils the spellbooks of his peers.

Meredorf soon graduated to experiments on animals and commoners in pursuit of a predictable and reliable intelligence stripped of the influence of both drives and emotions. He had no ability, however, to wield spells of enchantment which would have been most applicable to this line of inquiry. Ultimately abandoning a direct approach as futile, he instead set to crafting unique constructs and undead with ever great capacities for rational and intelligent self-direction. These efforts met with far greater success, although the results still fell well short of the mark. The constructs wanted for the potentiality of the living and the undead retained the perversity and appetites of the living.

The onset of arthritis forced the aging wizard to confront the betrayal by his own flesh. He was predisposed to neither the path of lichdom, deeming it beneath his abilities, nor the path of ascension, deeming its demands on his time too great. Instead he opted for the alchemical exilirs that kept the Alphatian elite youthful. Disdainful of the cult of youth that his his mother had worshiped, Meredoth was content to dial back the clock no further than his late sixties.

Politically, the question arose as to what do the psychopathic wizard. He would soon be confirmed as a supreme master, but there was no appetite to bring him to court. So upon being confirmed in 633 BC, a barony in the distant wilderness of Norwold was foisted upon him. Although a surprise, Meredoth was pleased enough with the arrangement.

The colonialists sent with him were left to take care of themselves on the mainland while the necormancer installed himself on an island that he named Todstein. His researched fared well, his vassals faired poorly. They beseeched him for aid. His response of animating their dead and putting them to work in the service of the needs of the living was ill-received. By spring, the colonialists were dead to their last. The obedient dead, however, had not slacked in their efforts and so there was some grounds for hope that a second batch of colonialist might survive the winter. The soil, however, proved to be no more fertile. Death by slow starvation awaited them too. On the first day of 635 BC, Meredoth answered their pleas in person. Food aplenty was distributed to all. Unfortunately, it was laced with a deadly poison. Meredoth then proceeded to animate the entirety community as obedient dead. Snow began to fall and a blizzard rapidly came into being. The necromancer retreated to Todstein. The island and its master were seized by the Mist. Todstein became one of the two principle islands of the domain of Nebligtode. And Meredoth became the darklord of this new island of terror.

Meredoth remains locked in his research on Todstein to this day. His kidnapping from Mystara and his imprisonment within Nebligtode troubles him very little. He plunders the human resources afforded him on Graben Island and ships in the immediate vicinity of Todstein as he sees fit. He is unaware of the curse that has crippled his creativity and effectively reduced him to a tinker. He is all too aware of the inexplicable and loathsome change that has overtaken his spellcasting and partially remade him as a spontaneous spellcaster. He has demonstrated little interest in making sense of his kidnapping and imprisonment beyond a curiosity into the the macabre effects that often attachment themselves to his necromantic spells. Still, his knowledge of the Land of Mists has grown with the passing decades. More than ever he takes pleasure in the seizure of the spellbooks of fellow wizards, although the thefts are now mostly effect by his agents. He has populated his island with golems, of various sorts, and with corporeal undead, principally lebendtod. Lebendtods are his principal agents on Graben Island, across the Nocturnal Sea, and on the mainland. They are used far less to shape events than to inform him of the rare event that is truly worth of his attention.

The necromancer assures his survival though the practice of cloning. As a dread possibility, a clone of himself was brought to independent existence after its entry into the Land of Mists. It fled Nebligtode, personally indulges in the the spell thieving that Meredoth must effect through his agents, and plots his destruction. Meredoth was himself killed in 737 BC by the same adventurers who laid waste to the Graben family. Meredoth exists today as a clone of himself. His destruction, however temporary, has forced him to bend his attention to a wholesale improvement of his the security of his island, of his lairs, of his boltholes and of his person. He will not be so easily embarrassed as second time.

The sole entity that Meredoth treat as being more than a tool is his sentient rod made from a white-fang that he has named Hoarfrost and that he has bonded with in lieu of a familiar. His most useful agent abroad is Colin Graben.
The Alhoon of Gothic Earth (real name unknown) is a lich mind flayer whom crash landed on Gothic Earth when its spelljamming ship gave out. Then a simple illithid, it quickly discovered it was far away from the Elder Brain and proceeded to murder its kindred still in stasis. Slowly it began to learn forbidden arcane lore and eventually transformed itself in a alhoon.

The alhoon has mastered biomancy enough to create an illithid leech that will transform a human into an illithid like aberrations and part of a hive mind, presumably controlled by the alhoon. These illithid drones appear perfectly human, but have much of the psychic powers and the tentacles of a mind flayer (but hidden inside the human skull.)

In 1893, Abraham Van Helsing encountered several of its drones and was ultimately captured. He was held in the lich's lair for a time before escaping. He learned from a stolen book much of its history and goals- including that it plans of inducting every intellectual person into his hive mind.
Emergence and Azalin
A feudal fantasy nation ruled over by the lich-king Azalin Rex, Darkon is the largest domain in Ravenloft. Physically, it takes up the northern third of the main continent, the Core, and its population easily exceeds that of any other single domain. Politically, Darkon is stable but not very influential, with its various nobles kept in check by Azalin's machinations.

In a real sense, Darkon's history is Azalin's history. After being driven out of his original homeland and finding himself in Ravenloft, Azal'Lan (originally a title meaning simply "Wizard King") was briefly befriended by Strahd von Zarovich, the darklord of Barovia. They were experimenting with a few magic spells to help each other escape until eventually Azalin gave up, and wandered into Darkon. After leaving, Azalin found himself the master of a sprawling domain that reflected his cruelty, his obsession with order, his cunning, and his greatest frustration: the inability to learn new magic.

Due to Azalin's desire for unswerving loyalty, Darkon has the most obvious and unique curse in Ravenloft. After spending from one to three months within its borders, anyone not native to Darkon loses all memory of their original homeland, instead believing themselves to have always lived in Darkon. Additionally, they lose all personal desire to leave the country, though some do so anyway out of necessity or circumstance. The memories include a whole new life history and victim often adopt gravestones at the local cemeteries as graves of their ancestors. The lost memories return upon leaving the domain. In From the Shadows, it is shown that their memories are magically recorded in a book in a library in Avernus.

|This feature leads some to believe that Darkon is an unsuitable realm for an outsiders-based campaign. Some players have experimented with campaigns of rediscovery, where the players have no clue as to their "real" histories but can discover them through investigation. (Inspired by the movie Memento and the video game Planescape: Torment.)

Some possible workarounds exist, but these involve doctoring the books in the library. As a plot device, it is possible that Azalin may bargain with powerful outsiders to restore their memories in exchange for a service. For low-level characters, another potential plot device is to have a "finder's agency" investigate their lost memories, which could uncover many events in neighboring Ravenloft domains. Also, the aimless vulnerability of individuals newly mind-wiped lends itself to interesting slavery or gang-related plots.

Azalin's desire to escape Ravenloft led to the disastrous Grand Conjunction in 740 Barovian Calendar, nearly destroying the Demiplane of Dread. His next escape attempt resulted in the equally catastrophic Requiem, destroying his physical form and turning the capital city of Darkon, Il Aluk, into a city of the undead, now called Necropolis. For the five years of Azalin's disappearance, Darkon itself was known as Necropolis due to the influence of that city's darklord, Death. Azalin was restored to his body and his throne in time, and now plots a third escape attempt, the details of which are unknown.

Darkon is one of the few domains of Ravenloft to accept demihumans such as elves and dwarves as equal citizens, and one of the few to embrace arcane magic openly. Darkon is often considered decadent by its neighbors, appropriate enough as Azalin encourages his citizens to debase themselves as a means of salving his own ego.

Virundus is the darklord and ruler of the Drowning Deep (and therefore Shay-lot). In life before coming to Land of Mists, Virundus was a great and mighty emperor who sought to not only become a god, but the greatest god, shunting out Oceanus, the Old God and supreme power of his people. Virundus committed many atrocities in his pursuit of godhood and immortality, culminating with the sacrifice of no less than 24,000 prisoners and slaves.

For the above act of evil, Virundus became a deity of a sort, a bloated monstrosity so big he could not escape his throne room, and his city was taken below into the watery depths of the ocean. Although by and large helpless outside of his immediate vicinity, the Dark Powers have granted his wish of utter devotion. His people serve him with a faithful (if fearful) zeal, yet he is tormented by the thought that his weakness should be revealed to his worshipers.

Virndus has several goals. H seeks a way to end his curse- perhaps by killing the last of the Old God's faithful. He also seeks to spread the Church of the God Below throughout the Core and make everyone venerate him. To both ends, he seeks to flood the communities of the surface to bring them down into the ocean, or to lift up Shay-lot to the surface.
Andres Duvall is a Bardic Lich. Once a human bard, he was a "guest" at Avernus, kept by Azalin to "lighten the mood." One day while snooping in the library, he was caught by Azalin and a blast of magic intended to kill him struck a magical tome and accidentally transformed him into a unique form of lich. Thus far, he has kept his good alignment and has worked against Azalin.

homebrew
In Twilight's Children, Andres's back story is different. Instead of entertainment, Azalin was using him in an attempt to circumvent his curse by learning bardic magic instead of wizardly magic. Andres was lured into this arrangement by The Kargatane, as he was raised in Neblus, and grew envious of the long lifespans of his elven neighbors. He knew The Kargatane as The Immortals, and was promised eternal life for his service. One of his first assignments for them was using his bard skills to gather information in Kartakass, regarding The Crown of Souls. On this assignment, he reported to Valric. His transformation into a lich remains the same, though rather than fighting Azalin, for now, he serves him, guarding his phylactery.

Yagno Petrovna was born in Barovia in 674 BC. He had not less than one sister and two brothers. Although bright, he was born with neither the vitality nor the strength typical of his family, and was moreover clumsy and painfully thin. Throughout his childhood and youth, he was bullied and beaten by his brothers. The Petrovna family had belonged to the nobility of Barovia (Prime Material Plane) and perhaps remained part of the nobility of Barovia three centuries later. It had, however, isolated itself in the mountains and had succumbed, at least to a degree, to the evils of inbreeding. Yagno, among a family that probably had more than its fair share of madness, was himself deemed to be deranged. He carried on discourses with non-existent people and cowered before non-existent creatures. One night in 696 BC, he was locked out in the Barovian night by his older brother Yoshtoi. Terrified, he ultimately took shelter in a small cave where he eventually succumbed to exhaustion and sleep. In the morning, he found the word Zhakata scrawled upon it wall. He imagined that Zhakata was a god that had protected him from the creatures of the night and he entered gladly into the service of the deity. Yagno had found his calling. He build an altar in the cave and began sacrificing animals to Zkakata. Sadly, the word had been put upon the wall by Yoshtoi. When Yoshtoi was murdered by parties unknown, suspicion fell on Yagno, and he may well have sacrificed his brother on that same altar. There were other disappearances and deaths too, those of Wladomir, the family's oldest retainer, and the shepherd twins Elessi and Evanda, who supposedly committed suicide. In 702 BC, Yagno was caught attempting to sacrifice his sister's newborn to Zhakata and was put to flight. He entered the Mists on the northern frontier of Markovia where the domain of G'Henna came into being with him as its darklord.

Hoelgar Amutsson is an aged, bitter outlander who after twenty years of seeking a way home wandered into Darkon and lost his memory of his former life. He is not a particulary effective master of the Harbor Watch and both the City Constabulary and the Kargat want him replaced. Still, the crime rate has fallen and he enjoys the support of the Mayor of Martira Bay. He will kill anyone who slights his honour by attempting to bribe him or see him hanged, but he doesn't care if his men accept bribes. Hoelgar owns a large weapon collection and talks of little else than weapons and their care.

Before entering Ravenloft Hoelgar was a berserker warrior carrying a mighty dragon slayer greatsword. Together with his men, he slew an entire brood of gold dragons, save one fugitive. It's mother, as she died, cursed Hoelgar to utter destruction when "the golden eyed youth wields the silver blade". Hoelgar followed the youth, intending to slay it before the curse could be fulfilled and became trapped in Ravenloft.
Avonleigh is a domain ruled by Morgoroth in the Shadowlands. Morgoroth exemplifies the concept of an "omnipresent" darklord, existing only as the influence he exerts on his domain (whispers in the wind, unnaturally cold wind) until the mirror shards in which his soul is trapped are reassembled. The Knights of the Circle, a knightly order founded by Alexi Shadowborn, meets at a circle of standing stones located within this domain.
