I've got some friends coming over on Halloween and my family will be flying in for the weekend. I want to make the weekend one to remember as I'll be celebrating it with those close to my heart.

Recommend some movies to scare the bejeezus out of them.

The Brood by David Cronenberg (1979)
Suspiria by Dario Argento (1977)

In the Mouth of Madness
Night of the Living Dead (George Romero's original)
The Hound of Baskervilles
The Dunwich Horror
Sleepy Hollow
The Resurrected

And though not exactly all that horrific, I make it a habit to watch The Rocky Horror Picture Show on Halloween.

Re-Animator
Bride of Re-Animator
Beyond Re-Animator
(What? I'm a Jeffery Combs fan and these are pretty loyal to Lovecraft's original story idea)

No love for From Beyond, Mikhal?

Also, there are some awesome reviews of Lovecraft inspired movies over at Teleport City...

To my eternal shame as a horror fan, I must admit I didn't know there was movie adaptation. I'll put it at the top of my Netflix queue right now.

I must confess that I would have trouble recommending the film version of this Lovecraft story.

If you're up for a well-done comic horror movie, look up Braindead (aka Dead Alive) - Peter Jackson (1992).

Another fun comic horror-- Fright Night (1985).

The Evil Dead Trilogy (Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, and Army of Darkness)

The first is less comedic while the second and third incorporate a fair amount of slapstick with genuine horror. I especially liked the Farewell To Arms joke in the second movie.

Hellraiser 1-8 (5-8 are fairly cerebral compared to the first four, but they're also more disturbing)

Heh! I actually own this one on VHS (bought it back when I was in college).
