I just finally had opportunity to read this novel. I understand that the novel is considered "non-canon" along with the Malken book.

My question is: At what point is it considered non-canon?

The entire novel? Or the last section "The coming of Necropolis"?

Honestly I enjoyed the book, and feel that it was true and complete with everything else I have read in Ravenloft until that final section.

Non-canon tends to mean the whole book, but you are right it was the final section of the book that dares to define the DP that got it declared as non-canon.

If you want to salvage the book from oblivion, it's simplest to proclaim that the final section isn't the real truth, but the DPs yanking disembodied Azalin's chain yet again. Just as King of the Dead messed with the lich's perceptions and memories of the past, so Lord of the Necropolis can be viewed as the Dark Powers' humoring Azalin's unspoken (and self-centered) expectations about his "tormentors".
