060606: A critique

well, I don't know about the rest of you, but I am mildly dissapointed with the turn out of today.
As You all know, it is June 06 2006, in other words 060606, and so far, there has not been ONE zombie attack, not ONE case of demonic possession, not ONE case of anything truly horrible like a baby with glowing eyes that reeks of sulfur, not ONE instance of cows milk instantly curdling, not ONE case of any goat sacrifices.
It is in this humble writers opinion that today has been a big fat dissapointment. I give today a big thumbs down, one star, and a recomendation for worst directorial debut of an evil day EVER!
...But on the other hand, there are still five hours left here in sunny Minnesota. Heres to hoping the zombies rise from there graves to consume us all in an orgy of flesh eating, shambling and moaning.
And how about a shout out to evil cults sacrificing beautifull virgins to appease there twisted demonic patrons.
And lets give it up for the maniacs driven by the obsession to eradicate what they believe to be the TRUE evil.
five hours and counting till this day is truly a waste. There is still time for Bush, er I mean the Beast to do something truly horrible to mankind.
Five hours left...
I gotta find a better way to spend my time.

I must say I'm also very disapointed. Ever since this day was scheduled by impresario John a few centuries ago, we fans have all been waiting for the first appearance of the Four Horsemen.
I mean come on!!!! They didn't do anything yet but there's still bigger than the Beatles. The least they could have done is come for 666 day!
I'll still look at the sky, because to be fair, most entertainers arrive late at their shows so maybe our favorite Horsemen are waiting for a last minute appearance.
But if they don't, their groupie cultists will be quite disapointed and so will I

On the plus side. here in Kansas City, our best radio station's DJ was possessed by Mephistopheles, and broadcast from Hell all day. If it had the words 'Hell', 'Devil', or 'fire' in the song, they played it. Many AC/DC (Hell's Bells, Highway to Hell), Van Halen (Running with the Devil), INXS (Devil inside), Def Leppard (Pyromania), Metallica (Unforgiven), that kind of thing all day long, all the while with commentary & jokes from Old Scratch himself.
I loved it!

By the way, if the 06.06.2006 was a "evil" date, how much more evil was the 06.06. 666 AD ? Or how "evil" will the 06.06. 6666 be ?

Well, 6/6/06 was surprisingly uneventful here, considering that Tulsa is in the heart of the bible belt. You would have thought there would be mass looting and panic over the date, what with there being a church approximately every half of a city block here.
The most we had was several radio stations that did the "Broadcast from Hell" motif. Even then they went for the most stereotypical songs they could find, so the playlist was like 5 songs long. That said, I don't care to hear Highway to Hell for a looooong time.

Wow, things where much more exciting here in Britain.
Put it this way: Shaun of the Dead is now a documentary...

More likely, he was probably holding a Winchester while typing.

Like rifles are that easy to get a hold of...
No, I just hid in my room until they passed.
Now most of them are locked in the Big Brother house, so we're safe...

A bunch of annoying twits locked in a house with flesh eating zombies...now that sounds like a reality show worth watching.

Well, now it appears that I was hit on 6/6/06 and didn't find out until today. My American Express Corporate Purchasing credit card was used Tuesday to buy $700 worth of jewelry from Hong Kong on Ebay! I've contacted the credit card company & cancelled the card, now I have to deal with their Fraud Dept. and my bosses on Monday. I do purchase a lot of things for my company online, it's likely that one of the 'secure' ordering sites was not as secure as they thought they were & that's how my number got out.

Well, in retrospect, my school's electricity went out on 060606, and a couple of instructors got trapped in the elevator, so they shut the school down. I guess losing out on my 400$ an hour class was a bit evil too.

I thought I should just point out a fact that was recalled in a humoristic politics / society show here in my country.
6/6/6 happens every 100 years, if we restrict ourselves to 2 digit year representation, so it's not that big a deal.
Actually, I found the whole hype around this only another merchant / media induced craze. I'm really sick of these sensationalistic news trying to scare the population of today. I know it's not a new tendency. Gothic literature itself fulfilled approximately the same role, but this seems a lot more gratuitous.
I actually never called this day an Evil day, day of the devil or what not, and I find the whole concept ridiculous and the special programmes dedicated to it even worse.
And if anything at all, 666 was the name of a man, not a date, day, evil number or whatnot.
Probably, John was simply trying to be clever, playing with the mediocre and still very naive cryptography of the times and the gullibility of this fellows. Very much the same as the predictions that Brazil will win this WC because 3964 = 1958 + 2006 (
http://noelnetblog.blogspot.com/2006/06 ... -copa.html)
or the 'illuminated' writer that concluded that the Portuguese edition of the Da Vinci Code hinted that the Graal was in Portugal. And the brilliant, irrefutable, awesome and unexepcted reasoning was this: the journey of Bishop Aringarosa to Portugal (? - I don't remember well, I haven't read the book anyway) begins in chapter 5, is referred in chapter 10 and ends in chapter 22, and 37 is precisely the chapter where the Graal is referred.
Truly, is there no critical reasoning in people's minds anymore? When will this numerologic nonsense ever end? It's actually one of the most offensive things to mathematics one can find nowadays, especially because they are often presented with the word Mathematics attached as a seal of authenticity. Complete nonsense.

Well, I doubt anyone here actually bought into that whole 666 thing. The thread is obviously meant to be tongue in cheek, so I think you're preaching the the choir.
Me, I didn't even notice the whole 666 thing until ... well, until I read this thread, actually. Though, admittedly I don't watch much television.
Anytime someone brings up the numerical taboo of triple six to me, I inform them that it is also the numerical symbol for the sun - thus blowing the air right out of their baloon.

Well, actually my post came a lot harder than I intended at first.
I was to have stopped after the first paragraph, pointing merely a curiosity. But actually, I'm so annoyed by some attitudes common in our day and age that I was carried away. I was not, by any means, criticizing people in this site or in this thread, because I recognize you give no more value to this than I do, but I was carried away. It's pointless to say why since my whole previous post tries to explain it.
I just do not wish to be misinterpreted in my intentions.

P.S.: just a small English question: what is the meaning of 'tongue-in-cheel'? I see it often used, but never really understood the meaning. Also, any clue as to what would be its literal meaning? In other words, why 'tongue-in-cheek'?
Thanks.
