A couple of my players want templates and to even it out I want to give everyone something, but I'm not quite sure yet what to make a rogue in the party. He wants to avoid undead templates at all costs. Is there one that will work well with a rogue?

Half-demon
Tiefling
some kind of half-dragon

Those are all pretty standard.

Whats a Tiefling, and where can I find it? Its not in MM1 is it?

It should be.

I'll just look it up...

My mistake Tiefling is an actual creature (coming under 'Planetouched' on page 151 of monster manual (v 3.0).

Half-fiend is probably your best bet. Unless you wanted them to be Half-celestial. Or a Lycanthrope -many variations there being Were-bat,rat,wold, boar, raven, ray, etc etc.

Well, if you look also for races, redcap from Denizens of Dread is an almost unkillable nightmare.

Wererat, tiefling, half-demon, a genasi perhaps.

Hey! Most of these templates are evil!
I would suggest a genasi. Not a dread elemental genasi, but a simple genasi.
Or better yet a template that you would figure out with the help of the player.
What about a half- fey?

Genasi is in MM2 right? I can't find half-fey in any of my books, and I swore I saw it somewhere before.

I am so glad someone mentioned Wererat. Also, just because the typical example of a creatuire bearing an template is evil, it doesn't mean all of them are. Unless there are restrictions on alignment that is, but even then there can be a few execptions ;)

Van Richten's Guide to the Shadow Fey.

How about the shadow-walker template from Unapprochable East? It is great for sneaking and fighting. And it's an aquiered template that the Teflammer Shadowlords only apply to members of their guild except in a very few cases, so you could get an adventure out of the PCs convincing them to perform the ritual that bestows the template on the rogue.

Also, www.crystalkeep.com houses a template collection in their D20 section.

war forgered (scout) from monster manuel 3 (3.5 ed.) I think would be perfect. Its a type of golem that has independent thought and reasoning so it has no problem becoming a player character, it has the same CR as a human with higher natural armour class (+2 to +4) the only problem is that it if it wanted to improve its Ac it would have to get the armour forged for its skin, so it cant take it off (but doesnt get penalitie for resting with it on either) and thiers a 25% chance that it ignores sneak attacks and critical hits made against it, because it body is its armour. The other problem is that it would have a high OR rating unless disguised. Definetly something to look into, it has its own feats and can be of any alignment. Ill be playing one very soon, and Illl let you now how it worked out.

I remember there being an article in one of the issues of Quoth the Raven (issue 7?) about "Dread Genasi" as well. I think that some of them would work well as the race/template for a rogue.
