The Witch of Worcester

Sarah's father is a wealthy shipping tycoon in Boston, but the young girl lived with her estranged mother in Worcester (a suburb of Boston). Mommy introduced Sarah to the ways of witchcraft at a very young age, but died before she could really teach Sarah anything useful. She was then raised by a few of her mother's friends, her father disavowing any knowledge of the illegitimate daughter he had.
Mommy's friends however, were rounded up and jailed on charges of witchcraft. Sarah then worked odd jobs, and worked minor enchantments, folk remedies, and love spells to the best of her knowledge for the locals, to earn enough to rent a room in a Worcester flophouse.
Through reading the local newspapers, Sarah became interested in 'weasel', and was very curious to see what he knew about 'the beast' (what her mother and ther friends referred to the Red Death as), intrigued by some articles he had written.
She really had no intention of spending the night in such a dreary house, but had been secretly following the reporter, and gotten caught in the rain that evening, so decided to snoop around a bit and see if it was safe to knock. Thats when the stable boy knocked her down and made her known to all.
She doesn't have faith in any sort of divine power, she isnt sure about whether 'the beast' is real, but she knows the powers her mother's friends taught are real, so she is seeking the truth about what exactly the beast is.
Unfortunately, that quest will probably consume her and turn her into some wicked servant of 'the beast' itself, but alas, only time will tell.

Her ultimate goal is to ruin her father, who she sees as responsible for her own poverty and her mother's death. The fact that he is a big shot businessman in Boston who denies even her basic existence only makes it worse.
