One of the Dementlieuse nobility, Count Wilhelm von Lovenhorst employed Professor Viktor Hazan as a diplomat and also supported his studies of the arcane arts. An important member of the Fraternity of Shadows, the Count eventually brought Hazan into the fold. Hazan's service to the Count ended with the latter's disappearance in 742 BC.[1] In 755 BC, he returned and assumed his prior role as one of the Umbra as if nothing had ever happened.[2]

Although Tarnos Shadowcloak is the count's senior and in theory more powerful, Count Wilhelm is one of the two that practically wields more power on a day to day basis because of his tact for diplomacy and interests in overseeing the affairs of the Fraternity. (Lord Balfour de Casteelle would be the other person his equal.)[3] Arguably, it has been his writing and philosophies that has shaped the Fraternity the most into what it is today.[2]

The Count is Darkonian, but he is one of the two surviving Umbra that withstood Azalin's purge of the University of Il Aluk. Count Wilhem has Schloss Lovenhorst in Lamordia, but he only visits there in the summer, the rest of the time staying in Dementlieu.[2]

Dread Possibility

In The Cuckoo's Egg dread possibility, Count Wilhelm von Lovenhorst's "disappearance" was part of an experiment to make one of the Fraternity a darklord. The experiment seemingly failed, wiping out any seeming corruption that Count Wilhelm had suffered before and was seemingly unable to fail any more powers checks. The Fraternity interpreted this as the Dark Powers catching onto their scheme and now ignoring the Count. However, in truth, the Dark Powers have transformed the Count into their puppet and employ him to sabotage the Fraternity's efforts.[4]
