Canon Information

Mongrelmen or mongrelfolk are warped humanoids, with appearances deriving features from several other species.[1] They have been transformed by magic[2], such as the case of those hailing originally from G'Henna and created by Yagno Petrovna.[3][4] Mongrelman can also be encountered in the domain of Hazlan.[5][6]

Due to their deformities, mongrelfolk frequently live as outcasts from society or even as slaves. Free mongrelmen tend to be timid[1] and avoidant when encountered outside of their own territory but fiercely protective of their homes.[2] They will slay those they feel threaten their communities without pause.[1]

In Curse of Strahd

Mongrelfolk are given 5th Edition game statistics in this module, including a random table to roll Mongrelfolk Special Features. They are experts in camouflage and sound mimicry.[2]. At the Abbey of Saint Markovia, the Abbot created a group of mongrelfolk out of the Belview Family at their insistence. Nowadays, their descendants languish away at the Abbey, too deformed or mad to be allowed to leave as potential dangers to themselves or others.[7]

Alignment

According to the 2nd Edition Monstrous Manual, mongrelfolk are Lawful Neutral.[1] In 5th Edition, Curse of Strahd lists them as having any alignment.[2]

Similar creatures

Because of their deformities and unnatural origins, mongrelfolk are similar to a more widely encountered creature in the Demiplane of Dread, the broken one (and its psionic offshoot, the Shattered Brethren). Unlike the mongrelfolk, broken ones tend to be decidedly sinister and malevolent in character.
