Mictlan is a domain and Island of Terror. It is a dense morass of steaming, tangled jungle where the invaders from the Holy Empire of Matherion battle incessantly with the natives of Mictlan in order to conquer their lands and enslave the "savage", "heathen" natives. The invaders are led by the brutal Commander Hernando Mouriros, whose forces are outnumbered by the natives but have superior weapons technology and are somehow seemingly immortal, with the exception that one perishes after each conquest of each city. With the tendency of the Mouriros' allied cities to turn on him when he conquers another one, this is a much more daunting task than it might seem.[9]

Drinkable water is surprisingly hard to come by, so most of the natives live huddled together in cramped cities overlooking the water sources. The greatest of these cities is Huanoquite, a city of 20,000 individuals (which would make it a large city in Third Edition demographics terms). The city is built upon a small archipelago on the lake of Jauja. The heart of Huanoquite (and of all of Mictlan itself) is the Pyramid of Huitzilopochtli, where torture and blood sacrifices are made to honor and appease the war god. The fanatical high priest Cuxi Yapanaque dwells in the pyramid and oversees both the priesthood and the rule of Huanoquite itself. Yapanaque's doctrine is that the sacrifice of human lives is needed to keep Mictlan from completely falling apart and being overwhelmed by the invaders. Long ago, the Eagle Warriors and the Jaguar Warriors brought Mictlan together as a unified empire under Huanoquite, but with the arrival of Mouriros and his army, the old order has begun to come apart at the seams.[9]
