Originally from Oerth, the Iron Flask was discovered in Hazlan by Brother Dominic, who founded the Iron Sanctum monastery of the Guardians to keep the flask away from public eyes.[1]

Details on the powers and brief history of the Flask can be found in the 2nd Edition sourcebook Book of Artifacts.[2]

Powers

No powers of the flask are listed in the Champions entry; previous editions have stated that the flask contains legions of fiends that can be called forth to do the owner's bidding. Such a device in Ravenloft would be devastating.

It begs the question as to why Hazlik has not seized the flask for himself. Ravenloft Gazetteer I indicates that the flask (not mentioned by name, see below for why) is held by the Order of the Guardians (along with a number of other evil artifacts) at the Iron Sanctum by way of a special agreement with Hazlik. This permission is granted upon the stipulation that the Order would not interfere with Hazlik's activities.[3]One suggestion on the RL list was that the Flask itself has a reality wrinkle, even though the fiends within do not. This would create a blind spot where Hazlik would be weakened, hence his trepidation to seize the flask.

Setting Controversy

Since the brief mention of this artifact in Champions of the Mists, Tuerny has returned to Oerth as a 17th level Wizard nalfeshnee.[4] Because of the 3rd Edition Ravenloft license restrictions, the 3e Ravenloft products have expunged all explicit mention of canon homeworlds for its inhabitants. The Iron Flask is mentioned only as a "terrible iron flask" that reportedly holds the "spirit of an unthinkably evil entity".[3]
