In 698 BC[1], Ludmilla Markov, wife of Barovian butcher Frantisek Markov, discovered her husband's foul fleshcrafting experiments he was performing on his animals. She threatened to let the public know. However, he caught her and used her for an experiment just as he had used his animals. Ludmilla lived on for a few days of torturous existence. This was the seminal event that led the granting of Markovia to Frantisek[2]
