Death knights are armored crusaders for evil created by deities of death from blackguards or blackherted rangers fighters, and barbarians.[1] Death knights also come from former paladins or other Lawful Good champions of martial combat that betrayed their ideals so horribly they were thus cursed by the gods with undeath after falling into depravity.[2] So corrupted, they are usually filled with hatred for the living, though they sometimes associate with liches or with skeleton warriors and lesser undead, the latter of which death knights can control as low-level clerics of evil alignment might.[2] A death knight has a number of potent spell-like abilities at its disposal, including Power Word Kill[2] and a trademark fireball-like blast of fire[2] and unholy energy. A death knight is protected by powerful spell resistance[2], to which it can sometimes use to reflect spells back upon their original casters.[2] Furthermore, clerics and other similar divine spellcasters are unable to turn a death knight, though the death knight is affected by Holy Word.[2]

Death knights may be encountered in Cavitius and commanding armies against Kas the Destroyer's armies in Tovag.[3] As a type of undead, death knights can be found in Barovia[4][5], Darkon[6][7], Har'Akir[8][9], Mordent[10][11], Sanguinia[12], Sithicus[13][14], and Valachan[15][16], As a type of undead that does not feed, death knights may be encountered in Keening.[17][18].
