Caves are cavities in rock that are capable of admitting creatures of at least medium small. A cave may have a depth of only a few feet or may be an immense complex consisting of scores of chambers, shafts and tunnels.

Caves are most often carved out of limestone by slightly acidic water and remain prone to flooding. Caves not resulting from water action and acidic erosion also exist such as lava tubes.

A cave typically supports a complex ecosystem. The mouth of a cave hosts flora and fauna adapted to the light of day such as ferns and bears. As the mouth of the cave is left behind and a deepening twilight takes hold, shade plants yield to fungi and nocturnal creatures such as bats reign. In the perfect darkness beyond, fungi are the lone flora and the fauna is usually adapted to an exclusively subterranean existence with the subdweller being but an example.
