Overview

The Celestines is an order of astrologers, prophets, and seers who map the heavenly bodies in order predict the future. Unlike the Vistani or other mystical groups, the Celestines see themselves as something like scientists, basing their predictions on what is observed. Although some of the most fanciful minded name Hyskosa as the first of their kind, a Barovian woman named Tiryn Olenka-Blaas is credited as the founder of the organization.[1]

Background

By 735 BC, Tiryn had discovered and disseminated enough knowledge to gather a crowd of curious stargazer disciples around her. Labeled as heretics and associated in the public eye with the Terg astrology, the Celestines grew closer together and soldiered on despite the threat of persecution.[2]

Then the Great Upheaval occurred, rearranging the stars and destroying the usefulness of most of Tiryn's work. Still, bolstered on by Tiryn's deathbed encouragement, her disciplines carried on her work. Astrilax diCorvi was led by a falling star to a hilly set of ruins just out of Vallaki. He discovered the view from the tower greatly assisted his view of the stars. Gathering together with several of Tiryn's other disciples, they formed the first Celestine observatory, Midway Haven.[3]

By 745 BC, the Celestine's star-maps of the Core were complete and copies of it now resided in many centers of learning outside of Barovia. They had also discovered that they could relate celestial events to earthly events and use the former to predict the latter.[3]

The Observatories

The Celestines are organized into independent communes, each in its own observatory. Although each Celestine observatory manages its own affair, they keep in close contact to compare knowledge and forewarn each other of events of dire importance..[3] Besides Midway Haven, other observatories include The Navigator's Bliss (Port-a-Lucine), Nostophilia (Nevuchar Springs), The Veidrava Tower (Sithicus), The Hall of Shields (Nidala), Brambleroot Dome (Kalidnay), The Resurgent (Pharazia), Zorya Poluchnoya (Vorostokov), Mahapralaya (Sri Raji), The Gatehaven Observatory (Paridon), Kasei Yama (Rokushima Taiyoo), and The Caretaker's Caves (G'Henna).[4]

Enemies

The Fraternity of Shadows and the Unholy Order of the Grave have tried to subvert the Celestines countless times.[4]

The Celestines were created by Dion Fernandez for the Undead Sea Scrolls 2002.
