Cannibalism is the act of eating the body of one's own species.[1] In the fantasy world of Ravenloft and elsewhere, this is expanded to include the eating of intelligent humanoids. Cannibalism is widely considered to be a forbidden and profane taboo in most lands and cultures across the Demiplane of Dread. As such, cannibalism represents a transgression worthy of a Powers Check. For these purposes, it is considered an act of Grave Robbery if the consumed corpse was not of a consenting person in life. Moreover, most religions consider the act of cannibalism perverse. As such, cannibalism represents an Unholy Act equivalent to Breaking a Tenet for their adherents. The churches of Ezra, the Lawgiver, Belenus, and the Morninglord all consider cannibalism to be forbidden. Moreover, violators of this taboo often become cursed to rise from the grave as the undead[2], such as the classic ghoul.

However, not in all cases does cannibalism represent an act of defilement and evil. In some cultures and religions such as the Callatians of Sri Raji, cannibalism represents a sacred practice of honoring and connecting with their deceased elders. Such practice is an act differentiated from evil acts of cannibalism practiced elsewhere because of the practice's motivation. Sacred acts of cannibalism do not require Powers Checks so long as they only involve the eating of those who consentaneously followed and bought into the cultural practice while alive.[2]

Characters with the Voracious feat have learned to mystically draw strength from cannibalism. However, as time goes on, they become more and more dependent and less able to resist the craving for humanoid flesh. Such characters futures will lead them to become ghoul lords upon death, a fate spoken with dread in Mordentish legend.[2]

With a few exceptions, the Hungry Dead represents the class of Walking Dead who are eternally driven by the constant hunger for humanoid flesh (or on occasion, more exotic body parts.)
