Anhktepot

Anhktepot is the greater mummy darklord of Har'Akir who is usually found within his tomb. His curse is the desire to be both mortal and a great ruler, but both his wishes are denied. All he could rule is a wasteland with only one tiny community; and the only way to have mortality granted to him again is to sacrifice a human being - but the boon only endures only from dawn to dusk during which he sacrifices the entirety of his awesome powers.[1]

Background

Ankhtepot's curse is ironic, because in life he lusted after nothing more than the secrets of immortality. He worked, tortured and tormented many of his slaves to find a way of achieving it. Thus denied, he turned his wrath upon Ra's church. Ra in turn, cursed him to gain the immortality he so desired, but at an unforeseen price. His touch was death, even to those he loved. Obtaining this knowledge cost him the life of Nephyr, his wife. Later when she rose from the grave to lovingly embrace him, thereby banishing her to the desert wastes. It was only later that he would come to understand he had been given the power to animate and command the undead as well as kill the living.[2]

Heeding not his former deity's warnings, Ankhtepot achieved a full moral backslide with the creation of many undead servants and other blasphemies. Eventually, his own former followers murdered and mummified him. The process drove Anktepot out of his right mind just as the Mists swallowed him up and made him darklord of a land much too small for him.[1][3]

Ankhtepot's story is well known to the people of Muhar, who avoid him out of fear.[4]

The 3rd Verse of Hyskosa's Hexad foretold the seventh rising of Anhktepot.[5] This event, known as the Night of Thoth[6], is played out in the module Touch of Death. Anhktepot, as a priest of Ra, is the "son of suns" referred to in the Hexad. His seventh rising occurs in response to Senmet's attempt to usurp his power. Senmet is the "knave", whom Anhktepot defeats at the end of the module.[5] The year of Anhktepot's seventh awakening is 738 BC.[7]

Relationships

Among Anhktepot's relations, his wife was Nephyr[2], and his son was Thutepot.[8] Anhkamon was his vizier.[9] Those who he raised as greater mummies are known as the Children of Anhktepot. Among them is Hotep who he forced into perpetual slumber so as to nullify the risk that her lust for revenge posed.[10]

Senmet has been one of the greatest thorns in Ankhtepot's side. He has schemed to take power over Har'Akir from Ankhtepot several times.[11][12] This is another irony, as Senmet was created by Isu Rehkotep using a magic scroll originally written by Ankhtepot himself.[13] Although Isu is dead[14], Although Semet's fate is left vague in his entry in Ravenloft Monstrous Compendium I & II[15], Senmet remains on the loose in the deserts of Har'Akir according to Domains of Dread.[16]

Abu al Mir is another fugitive from Ankhtepot's wrath. Abu al Mire is the last pathetic survivor of a temple of rebellious werejackals who were manipulated by Senmet into trying for a coup against Ankhetepot. Ankhtepot has sent Lef Ahmnet after Abu to finish the exacting his wrath.[17]
