Would a Fanfic section be of use on the boards?

Fiction about Ravenloft or Gothic Earth

Would you like to see a fan fiction section added to the boards?

Yes, definitely!!

No, I don't think that would really add anything to the boards.

Or it might be easier if each author has two threads...? The first thread would be for the story, and the second thread would be for the commentary (so as not to break-up the storytelling).

You could use the "fiction" subtitle for the former, and a "comments" subtitle for the latter. For example, Guardian could create a story thread entitled Tales from the Land of Mists (fiction) and he could have a second commentary thread called Tales from the Land of Mists (comments).

With the board newly created, we can certainly play around with the concepts a bit, but I don't think that two threads per story would be too much. Plus, I think it would be easier to keep track of comments within the lengthier story posts (not unlike what we do in the role-playing forums).

Just something to think about...

Hmm, all the controversy... one thread? Two? I think I'll just spin my tale and let you Avatars of the Ethereal (or mods, I think your other name is ) come to the final decision and then I'll do whatever you decide. I guess I am just a pawn of the Dark Powers after all, even though I strive to be a Guardian of Twilight and keep the last embers of light carefully shielded from your dark touch... *sigh*

Oh, well.

My comment to restrict comment threads was when the fictions thread were on the main board only. Here there's more room.

Okay.. ISSUE
I have a story I'd like to post. The trouble is it crosses over into adult/erotic fiction. It's not comedicly over the top or anything but if I try to cut the sensuality and sexual implications out, it loses half its impact. There's no foul language or anything. I've read victorian novels for the express purpose of avoiding such words. I began it as a tragic romance and it just turned into what it turned into. I'm asking here if I can post this or if it would be edited for content. :?

At a message board we have no idea who is posting. We could all be mature DMs in our twenties or thirties or there could be a thirteen year-old with a large vocabulary posting invisibly. Or a sixty year-old grandmother (D&D is 30yo, it is quite possible. I know a mother of three that plays and started her children on the game).

Don't post anything that you wouldn't feel entirely comfortable reading out loud to both.

And try to keep sexuality metaphorical or descriptive without being explicit. Carefully word choice can make it obvious to people "in the know" but outside the perspective the the young'uns.

If the content is that questionable and you're still not sure, maybe you should PM it to one of the Frat and see what they say about it?

Okay, that's good to know. I wrote a new fiction all in a hurry this morning, while the idea was still fresh in my mind, and I hesitated about posting it for that exact same reason. There is no pornographic or explicit language, no description of body parts or anything... although it is very clear that anybody familiar with what's going on will be able to "fill in the gaps" on their own.

In my story, though, the primary intent is not to titillate. The plot remains very dark throughout.

One other thing I'd like to mention.

I know the Fiction forum is young and we're all just starting to get used to it etc. But for a young forum, we have a large number of people posting stories. This is a very good sign.

However, unfortunately, we do not have so many people posting comments. In the other fiction forums I've been to, this can be an issue of contention. Most writers appreciate some feedback, especially if they've been writing at their own time with no expectation of any tangible benefit. The constructive criticism and acknowledgements of appreciation from their readers is literally the only reward they get from it.

I've been trying to post in every comments section I can. It takes a little while. But it's also worth doing because reading each story, I get new ideas for conversations, encounters, and plots for my own adventures. Plus it's just plain cool to be able to find out what other like minded people make of our favorite campaign setting!

So if you visit the Fiction board at all and if you read a fiction story thread, don't forget to post something in the discussion threads. The story writer will be happy for any comments that show their story reached somebody and gave them something to read, if only for a few moments in their day.

Post your comments! :)

I love the idea of a fiction forum. I like to read, and write (although sometimes it takes a while to get them finished) RL fiction.
But if I may suggest...
Maybe after there is a good selection of them, maybe drop them into a fiction netbook. Maybe ask the author if they want to tweek it before putting the netbook out. Then offer it up for us lowly travelers in the darkness to download for their own library...
Just a thought...

Just a note to all authors - I'd suggest you proactively create two threads - one with the actual fiction in it, and one with comments.

There's been an occasional mistake where a newcomer might post a comment in the original thread, which breaks up the reading for everybody who then visits that fiction thread later.

Well, folks, seems like traffic on the page is way to low to justify keeping this section of the board up.

Also, due to server problems, it will be the part of the forum most likely to be deleted in the upcoming switch to make the page fit for the RL 4e campaign.

Please save your threads in some form, or move them to the new fan fiction format with the *move bottom* at the upper end of the page if you are still interested in continuing your tales.

All the best,

The Grim Admin
