Apologies Ewan, but if I may, Raen's pride is not injured by stepping on a mud puddle. If anything, it's closer to him falling down and kissing the mud out of happiness. I didn't go deep into his feelings, which I regret, but he was fighting a feeling of hopelessness, of impeding doom. He was trying to keep it together.
Stepping into something real even if it is cold, dirty mud, is something he can comprehend and it would be very much welcome at this point.
