Whispering to her "Lady Elissa you have a choice now. You can go back to your manor if you like, or you and I can sneak away

to a safe place. I don't know if you still want to be with this Richard, but if you do I'd be willing to help you. It is all up to you, lady.

Whatever you decide, I am really sorry it turned out this way. All I wanted to do was help you find your love. I hope you will

remember me after this is all over, you seem to be a very nice person milady."

Alfonse, knowing his limits (and how far he's pushed his luck already tonight) stays with the girl while the watch chases the assassins.

He doesn't respond to questioning from the group, besides to say "We'll discuss our employer later."

When the question of Elissa's identity comes up, he leads the girl forward by the arm. "This is Miss Elissa Holbin. She's had an exciting evening. We'll be glad to escort her home if you're needed in the pursuit."
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

Elissa hesitates as GERTIE whispers a rather long message in her ear.
But she allows Alfonse to lead her forward.

(The Watchmen in the pasture have just now succeeded in pulling the injured-- possibly dead-- man from his mount. One grabs the horse's reins.)

The Watch leader is still staring at the two young women as Alfonse confirms that one is a Holbin.

"Oh! I had word of some trouble in the eastern city tonight, but I did not know a Holbin was in trouble. Now then, you fellows are not taking her anywhere. If she is a Holbin, why, then all of you will come along with us to Holbin House. As for pursuit, those men are gone. On foot, we aren't going to catch them. If you know who they are or where they are going, you had better tell me now."

Tom steps forward and says:

"I'm not sure who the masked man was but I have strong evidense of his identity. You will not like to listen the suspect's name though... but everything will get clear if you listen to us, full story not just the first part please...Lady Elissa can confirm at least the second part of it. Oh, and if my theory is right you should probably look for Richard Savelle as well. He is or might be in danger as well."

"What? The Savelles, too? It must be a quite a mess are you all tangled up in. I'll send a runner ahead to warn my guild superiors this is big stuff, not just a burglary and a brawl. Need more men, riders. You keep talking as we go..."

The watch leader listens as his men draw the still nervous horse with its limp rider in closer to the party.

Tom narrates the past few days events to the Watch leader and finishes talking saying:

"I know what we did was stupid, we just wanted to help two people in love, Lady Elissa can confirm that we tried our best to do so and she was happy at the beggining that someone tried to help them. We didn't know that was a conspirancy and we would have been ambushed and would risk her and our own lives. Our first priority was to get Lady Hoblin to safety that's why we got in the cabin because we thought that the killers wouldn't check in there. Alas someone told them our secret and they found us again. But who knew our location? Mr Alfonse went only to see Mr Aldron Foelbre and then we saw him on a horse facing the masked man. This masked man was trying to snatch Lady Elissa, Mr Alfonse was trying to save her as we did. We were lucky you came."

Making sure to keep his hands in view, he steps closer to the watchman. "Ah, I'm a stranger in your city, but in my home nobles' business is dealt with some discretion. This is a dispute between houses. If I'm wrong and this falls under your jurisdiction I'll happily go with you, but I just didn't want to put you in an awkward spot."

DAWN

With the NIGHT WATCH

"It's our main business to stop crimes in progress and put out fires. Now, trouble between houses..."

He nods to Elissa.
"Signorina"

She says,
"They are telling the truth."
She gives him a nervous smile.

He bows.

The watch leader then turns to one of the younger, skinnier watchmen.
" You run to the Savelle Estate. Get a mount if you can, but get there. Say that the Nightwatch has had an unconfirmed report Richard Savelle might be in trouble; and that if the gentleman really is missing, ask him to please send someone to our guild-house. We may know more then."

To another man,
"You, go to the stronghouse. Tell the duty captain..."
He quickly summarizes the report the others have given him.
"And make sure to give a description of the swordsmen who rode away."

The leader then gestures toward the limp figure in the horse.
"I don't suppose one of you is a physician? If he lives, he can answer some questions."

SUNRISE

AT THE FRISKY FRIAR

TITUS, FILD, and DAMIEN have made it back without further incident.

One of the men on the staff admits them after a moment of hold up at the door while he squints at their faces.

The place is not busy in the early morning, except for servants doing chores.
Theo, the loinclout-wearing potboy and all around lackey, spends an unusual amount of time staring at them.
But the boy soon leaves for his chamber pot collection duty.

The smell of warm bread seeps from the kitchen door behind the bar.

Men in the common room sleeping area lie snoring or turn fitfully in their blankets. A few rise, rubbing their eyes.

No sign of Alfonse or the siblings. Nor the dog.
Nobody claims to have seen them, but a lot of people are still asleep, so it might take some time to question everyone.

And how discreet do they wish to be?

MEANWHILE

ELSEWHERE

Two men converse in a shadowy stone chamber.

"The Serpent is angry."

" What do you expect? The plan is not going right."

"I think the plan is changed, now."

" Good thing we got all these..."

Fild has tried to remain awake. But after a warm meal and some milk to chase the anxiety away, he found himself nodding forward on his seat at the table. His sword on, his arquebus tied to his back, Fild sits at a corner, near a window. People come and go as he positions his body in the two walls of the corner for comfort and warmth. It's not very comfortable with an Arquebus lodged between his back and the corner, but he doesn't want to get very comfortable.

He watches people arrive and leave. His memory goes back home, in the Tazeloff gatherings. He should have listened to Jild, his sister and pinched the big cat that was sitting on sleeping aunt Iorda. Sure he would have got in trouble, but it would now have been a good memory...

A hand shakes him. Fild realizes he has dozed off and a watchman is upon him! They caught him! He lets a loud yelp and his hand goes to his sword as he's prepared to run... until he realizes a moment later he's not being arrested. He quickly apologizes to the guard.
"Sorry! You startled me. That's it. I have dozed off and you startled me. I wasn't scared because you're a guard, I haven't done anything bad. And we gnomes sleep late and wake late. That's why I was dozing off, nothing out of the ordinary... You were saying my good man?"

Fild is quickly informed that he's being summoned and that his friends are already giving a report over incidents of the last night. On that, Fild looks around. The guard is alone and the Frisky Friar doesn't seem to be surrounded. If his friends have betrayed that he was complicit in kidnapping nobility, he would have got a much stronger "escort".

So, he follows the guard.
