POVERO Chapter Three

Post by ewancummins »

AT THE SIGN OF
THE ADMIRAL'S ARMS

A manservant escorts the party to the same private room in which Alfonse and his friends (though not Titus) dined with the aristocrat their first night in POVERO.

ALDRON FOLBRE
VIEW CONTENT:
trim, athletic, handsome, laurel hair, blue eyes, looks to be in his late twenties, clean shaven, fashionably dressed
waits in the chamber, seated at the dining table with a goblet of wine and some loose papers set before him. As the party enters, he neatly stacks the papers, with a blank sheet on top.

"Please come in. No need for extensive formalities. "

He directs the servant to bring wine, bread, and whatever fruit or other food the member's of Alfonse's party might desire.

He studies Titus a moment, and then addresses him,
"I've been told that you are a priest of the Speaker in Storms. Do I have that right?"
Delight is to him- a far, far upward, and inward delight- who against the proud gods and commodores of this earth, ever stands forth his own inexorable self.

Tom enters the room and salutes Aldron as better as he can addressing him as he has told them to. Then looks around the beautiful decoration, takes a seat and orders at the servant some wine and fruits. He doesn't look at the papers yet, he waits Aldron to tell them what is this new job about.

Gertie follows Tom snd lookd around, taking in the surroundings as someone of her profession would. She will sit, and ask for some cheese and juice

if any is available. ""If you don't have any, it's ok, I did have a bite earlier."

Alfonse takes a seat, greeting lord Aldron as is proper.

He seems about to launch into a discussion of their previous business, but snaps his jaw shut quickly as he instead addresses Titus. He drums his fingers on his legs, albeit below the level of the table so as to keep his impatience out of sight.
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

Fild enters and closes the door behind him as the servant leaves.
"Good day Lord Folbre" he says simply and moves to a chair. "You know Lord Folbre, I appreciate very much that you don't hold us to much decorum. You have my respect for your position in society as well as for the trust you've shown us and the payments. I'm sure your achievements are partially because of your upbringing, so I also respect your ancestors since your parents obviously did a good job with you.

I don't know how to show that respect properly and I don't think excessive bowing and, frankly, weird long phrases communicate that respect. But, to be on the safe side I want to be clear: I don't do the weird long phrases cause I don't know how to do them proper and they may seem comical coming from me because you're all so much bigger. You have my respect as much as the guys that do the bows and say the phrases respect you. Well, the sincere ones anyway."

Aldron does not wait for Titus to give a full answer.
Instead, he picks up and fills a wine cup, then hands it to the priest.

Turning to Alfonse, he says,
" Ah, now that everyone is here, we can begin more formally. Is there anything you'd like to add to your prior report, Magus? Or any questions you have for me, before I begin? I trust we can discuss all these sorts of things freely in the current company. That is, I trust that Speaker Titus is now one of your party. "

Aldron nods to Fild.
" Of course."

He then returns his attention to Alfonse, sparing the occasional glance toward Titus.

"I believe there are people who believe in it," Alfonse guardedly replies, "I couldn't say, myself. Not many opportunities for romance at the University."

He looks down at the stack of papers. "Love letters?" he suggests.

"No, not letters," Aldron says.
"True love. I used to be a bit dubious about its existence, but now I'm not. My friend Richard convinced me. He's deep in love with a perfectly pleasant young lady, Elissa. She's quite devoted to him. I wish them both happiness, and in better circumstances I'd already be thinking of what to give them as a gift in honor of their wedding. But of course things aren't that simple. Their families are at odds. And these aren't just any two families. Richard Savelle. Elissa Holbin."

Tom thinks for a moment where he has heard these names before. Then remembers that Aldron told them couple things the other day about them, but they will need more information if they want to accomplish the task.

"These are the other two important families you have mentioned the other day, am I right? Can you tell us more about them please and what do you want us to do? Convince their families that they are good for each other or try to get them away in secrecy so they can marry?"

Fild quite confused by the true love thing blinks at the mention of the names.
"What?" He says before he corrects his tone somewhat.
"With all due respect lord Folbre, Do you possibly mean the other two big families that more or less run this city along with your esteemed house... which have come to blows time and time again and your own household guards had to intervene to avoid bloodshed?
Or is it simply some minor branch of those two without too much power?

I am not sure about customs here Lord Folbre, but ... I think this situation, if your friends are of the important families, could potentially lead to extended fighting and tragedy for all involved. Could you perhaps ... " he looks around to make sure they're not being overheard and whispers "... convince them to elope? Or their disappearance would add fuel to the fire?"

Gertie does listen to the "love" discussion. She offers no insight or comment on the subject. To her, she is too young to know about love and such,

so refrains from commenting on the subject. She does, however, wait for his offer of employment. For now, she indulges herself on cheese, juice and

looking around the room.
