Throne of Blood

I've had had this film on my "to watch" list for a long time, and have to regret now that I haven't watch it any earlier.

What makes it relevant to this board is that this film has finally made Rukoshima Taiyoo 'click' for me. The Japan expy has always stuck out like a sore thumb to me and seemed only to exist to please those who want to play ninjas in each and every single campaign setting, and I never had any idea what to make of it.

Throne of Blood has for the first time shown me what the nexus point between chanbara and gothic novels could look like, and how to seamlessly blend the two disparate genres. Bonus points for a typical Kurosawa film that has no shiny good heroes and doesn't leave any character happy with the results of all the actions and events, and a chanbara film with an unusually high dose of the supernatural without also including anime-style silly kewl moves.
Nun gut, es sei dir überlassen!
Zieh diesen Geist von seinem Urquell ab
Und führ ihn, kannst du ihn erfassen
Auf deinem Wege mit herab.

You should follow up with Ran, which Rukoshima Taiyoo draws even more inspiration from.
