DIPLOMAT HOTEL
Baguio

Image
This abandoned building used to be a rest house and a Dominican monastery way back 1911 before it was developed into a hotel. During World War II, numerous nuns and priests were beheaded there and this was believed to be the reason why headless apparitions can often be seen during the night inside the hotel.

The hotel ceased operations in 1987 and was henceforth closed to the public. However, people living nearby would often be disturbed by unexplained sounds coming from the building at night. They would hear banging of doors and windows, clattering of dishes and voices of screaming people, who seem to be agonizing.

Diplomat Hotel is currently undergoing renovations, but supernatural events continue.

MANILA FILM CENTER
Manila

Image

Former First Lady Imelda Marcos had the grandiose notion of turning the Philippines into the Cannes of Asia by starting an international film festival. They decided the venue to be held beside the Cultural Center of the Philippines and had a date set for January 18, 1982. She ordered a huge building built, designed on the lines of the Greek Parthenon. During construction, on November 17, 1981, shortly before 3:00 a.m., an entire floor collapsed and caved in on the floor below. The death toll was 168.

But the building was due to open for the festival, and the order was given: “Pour the cement.” The bodies of the dead workers were thus covered over, and their remains are now part of the building.

Today the Manila Film Center is rarely used. Those who enter often see the unsettled souls of the dead workmen guarding the resting place of their bones.

MALINTA TUNNEL
Corregidor Island

Image

Created in 1922 as a bomb shelter for American troops, Malinta Tunnel eventually served as the seat of the Philippine Commonwealth Government shortly before the fall of 1941. It was eventually taken by the Japanese, but before that Malinta Tunnel was described as damp and poorly ventilated and, except for the hospital, not designed to quarter humans. Its occupants, numbering over four thousand, and sixty-eight women, including nurses and seventeen civilians and army wives, complained of dust flying around, the flickering blue mercury vapor lights, and the dull boom of exploding bombs when Corregidor was under siege. Refugees felt suffocated, helpless and trapped, being unable to fight back. Malinta Tunnel finally fell with hundreds of casualties.

Though now a museum, ghosts are still said to linger here. One of the more commonly-sighted spirits that has appeared here is a nurse with red hair wearing a uniform from the Red Cross. She seems to be stuck in time attending to the wounded soldiers on the island.

CULION LEPROSARIUM
Culion Island

At the turn of the 20th century, Culion was the largest leper colony in the world. While American officials attempted to create a leper colony here that could hopefully exterminate the disease, the first 600 lepers on the island, brought there in 1906, were left without adequate medical care. Dozens died in the first few years, and hundreds more would perish. Though the hospitals now lie empty, it is said that the lepers' disfigured spirits haunt these buildings still.

ILUSORIO MANSION
San Ildefonso, Bulacan

Known more commonly as "The Red House," the Ilusorio Mansion is rife with meanings : the “Comfort Women” of Mapaniki, Candaba, Pampanga have their narratives that recount their own harrowing experiences in this mansion during the Second World War. To punish the village of Mapaniki for supporting guerilla fighters, the invading Japanese soldiers killed its male inhabitants and brought several of its female inhabitants to the mansion, then a Japanese army garrison. The females served as comfort women for the soldiers in the house. Many of the women were abused and killed in the vicinity of this house.

The Ilusorio Mansion has been declared local heritage, but the ghosts of the tortured women, as well as their torturers, are said to linger in and around the mansion.
