Nova Vaasa: Mytteri

Post by Rock of the Fraternity »

I'm fairly sure the root of Mytteri, the counter to Nova Vaasa's Lawgiver, would have been the Forgotten Realms' Mystra, who became an opponent of Bane - the root of the Lawgiver. The reference in Gazetteer V that the Nova Vaasans generally consider arcane magic to originate with Mytteri is a nice little hint, too. ;)

But has anyone worked Mytteri out?
In a land with such terrible pressure exerted on the peasantry to obey and provide for the needs of the aristocracy, isn't it inevitable that there would be those who start to rebel against the whole society, including the church of the Lawgiver? Regardless whether benevolent or nihilistic, such individuals might seek spiritual succor elsewhere, and Ezra and Hala do not have a 'significant' presence in the land.
What better outlet for those few souls whose frustrations cannot be suppressed by the Lawgiver's teachings and demand an outlet than a spiritual figure which is both local and devoted to uprisings and chaos of all kinds?
Mytteri
Rainbow Vortex
Alignment: CN
Cleric alignments: CE, CG, CN
Portfolio: Change, chaos, destruction, magic, rebellion, renewal
Domains: Chaos, Destruction, Liberation, Magic, Renewal, Trickery
Weapon: Scythe

Dogma: Nothing is truly constant. Change is inevitable, and even if change brings pain, you may yet grow better for the experience. All attempts to curb change lead only to stagnation and despair, as change is like the tide; all attempts to hold it back will only cause it to wash you away, breaking you and all you hold dear until you have only tears and death left. Embrace change, and you may ride it across the vast plain of existence like a mighty horse! Embrace change, and you may change what is for the better.

Worshipers of Mytteri are few and far between and enjoy complete autonomy.
The faith has no dogma other than its exhortation to embrace change because stagnation will only lead to suffering, no set rituals, no iconography or hierarchy. If Mytteri is portrayed in art at all, it is usually as a double spiral of rainbow colours, with one spiral turning inward and the other outward.
Those few who worship Mytteri and receive magic as Adepts or Clerics generally select an apprentice who they feel can be trusted not to betray them and engage in one-on-one instruction in their own version of worship. Given the complete autonomy of the faithful, such worship may vary from joyful song to the torturous sacrifice of captured faithful of the Lawgiver, all depending on the faithful in question.

Honestly I sort of imagine that Mytteri worship in Nova Vassa is comparable to many forms of "Satanism", where it isn't an ethos to itself, just take everything you're original religion says is bad and say it is good instead and if the original religion says it is good then you say it is bad.

In MY (emphasis placed so if you want to do something differently no problem with that) if people don't want to worship the Lawgiver, they rebel by worshiping the two ancient cat goddesses of Nova Vassa who are the Ravenloft equivalent of Bastet (CG) and Sekhmet (CN), their names in Nova Vassa are Bubahkaa and Sehkmaa (also known as that cat god/goddess Malken started a cult around as a front for all his illegal operations).

Cats in Nova Vassa are already short hand for flouting authority (see "Rider's Dilemma" in Gaz V) so it makes sense to worship a feline deity if you want to thumb your nose at (or give the finger to) the Lawgiver.
