Dear White Wolf Users,
Like many other well-known companies of the last few years, White
Wolf was the target of an attack by international hackers this
weekend. These hackers are now attempting to extort money from us
with the threat of posting user data to the internet. We have no
intention of paying this money, and are in contact with the FBI in an
attempt to bring these criminals to justice.
We are choosing to make this public so that our users and fans can
take any precautions needed to protect themselves. We are
recommending that if you have used your White Wolf user password as
the password for any other services you use on the internet, that you
change them immediately.
These hackers were able to exploit a flaw in our software and access
user data, this data included usernames, email addresses and
encrypted passwords. As far as we can ascertain, they were unable to
access any credit card data (nor have they claimed they did).
However, it is possible for the encrypted passwords they accessed to
be decrypted given enough time.
In addition, the site will be down for the next few days while we
evaluate some of the software we are using and take appropriate
action to help prevent future attacks.
We appreciate your patience and concern while we work through the
details of this process.
In addition to this posting we will be emailing our userbase with
this information. For correspondence regarding this, please direct
all queries to wwaccounts@white-wolf.com .

WHITE WOLF'S BEEN HACKED! Read now!
I just received this e-mail a couple minutes ago:
Pinky! Are you pondering what I'm pondering?
I think so, Brain, but didn't we give up ritual murder for Lent?

Neat, but what kind of moron asks for money from the people they hack?
Money means a trail, which inevitably leads to a jail cell.
Hmmm... I wonder if they were even hacked at all?
Maybe WW has released more info, but this message doesn't suggest that the hackers have actually got anything.
This could be a bluff.
In any case, I doubt its likely that we will see any of the information we realy want released - like the notes from the gazeteers, or Masque of the Jade Dragon.

As Conrad said, if you use only one password you could be in trouble. No likely to matter as WW probably has thousands of users and accounts with a large majority being old and unused leading to dead e-mails and the like.
You would need to check each account and try e-mail addys for still in use ones and then compare passwords at the non-rejected/returned ones. That would be a pain. But, for a hacker, not impossible. And you'd likely just gain access to a few shlub's e-mail accounts.
The more frightening possibility is gaining access to people's PayPal or eBay accounts, or other sites that use an e-mail as a username.
I'm not worried as all they'd get from me is the generic password I use for messageboards (except this one...) cause it's easy to remember and quick to type when using public computers.

So you can now e-mail insults and such to us and then say "Oh, NO! I haven't sent that! The Hackers did! ! ! Or somebody that bought that from the hackers!"
And for the Record I remember a post Yeeeears ago in the SotK site that someone said that perhaps somebody is using his e-mail account.

Yeah I got the same email this morning (about the hack). Weird situation, who the hell would want to rip off a gaming company? Everyone knows that they don't make that much money in the first place. Their profits are nothing compared to other internet giants like amazon and ebay.
Ah whatever, it was probably some bored 11-year-old from Tel Aviv or something...

Try doing this to amazon and e-bay is probably an exercise in Frustration... They are expecting these attacks and they have their measures.
On the other hand, WWolf makes enough money IMO and it is a far easier target.

Just got an apparent note from the hackers, from my e-mail address to my e-mail address. Seems they are selling all the info from the WW Database for $10 to anyone who wants it since WW didn't pay them. I guess I can expect massive spam increase in my future. Thankfully my ISP filters a lot of spam before it reaches me.
